The Prince George's County Government Department of the Environment is seeking qualified applicants to fill an Animal Care Attendant position, grade G13, within its Animal Services Division.
About the Position:
This is entry-level service maintenance work responsible for the overall care of animals in the custody of the County’s animal shelter to ensure a safe and sanitary facility for animals and people. This position maintains and thoroughly cleans kennels, cages and other common areas at the animal services facility using approved procedures and techniques, which would include but are not limited to: removing waste, power washing kennels, mopping / scrubbing and disinfecting areas where animals are kept, fed, watered and generally cared for. Prepares food, feeds, provides water and sanitizes litter boxes and feeding equipment. Gathers and launders soiled pet bedding and replaces it with clean pet bedding. Possess and maintain basic knowledge of proper bathing techniques, tools, products and supplies that are required. Ensure animals are bathed and groomed, removing all tangles and matted fur to include the trimming of nails. Able to stand for several hours grooming all types of animals in the shelter environment. The incumbent can provide medical treatment, humane handling and care for all shelter animals. Knowledge in animal care and diseases that are common to the Shelter environment. Great customer service skills.
What You'll Need:
High School diploma or GED.
Preferred Qualifications:

6 months of experience working with animals in a shelter environment.

Basic knowledge of animal health.

Certification in animal health or animal technician, Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT), Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT), Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG), Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR), Grooming Certificate and/or several years of grooming/bathing experience.

Groomers: Please be able to share a portfolio of your grooming work.

Ability to work effectively under adverse working conditions.
This position is considered essential personnel in accordance with DoE Instruction 110.4.duties.
Participate as an "Essential" employee in the department's snow and ice control program and other emergency or special activities as assigned.
DURATION OF ELIGIBILITY: Candidates will be selected from a temporary register of eligible candidates, which will become effective approximately four (4) weeks after the closing date. Once a selection has been made, the register will expire.
