    General Notes

    The Animal Resources Center (ARC) at The University of Texas at Austin covers approximately 150,000 square feet of research animal space. The Animal Resources Center is responsible for managing four centralized animal facilities as well as smaller satellite locations.

    The Animal Resources Center is seeking an experienced animal care professional to provide husbandry and other animal care services to all facilities under the ARC's management. This position will be a great opportunity for someone eager to learn and navigate multiple facilities and research animal species.

    Purpose

    This position is responsible for providing animal husbandry at the ARC facility, primary work location, for 50% of the time and the remaining 50% of the time providing backup to the other facilities managed by the ARC, as needed.

    Responsibilities
    • Operates cagewash equipment including rack washers, tunnel washers, and autoclaves. Sanitizes animal housing equipment using cage-washing machines. Fills drinking bottles with fresh water and cages with bedding.
    • Provides animal husbandry and care for all species housed in ARC facilities.
    • Observes animals for signs of disease and/or illness and reports conditions to the veterinary group.
    • Completes all required job-related documentation, including per diem sheets, checklists, animal records, and files.
    • Cleans cages, pens, and animal quarters. Sanitizes animal rooms, equipment, and facilities to prevent infections and disease. Maintains accurate records of room/equipment cleans.
    • Performs routine maintenance checks on equipment and reports any equipment that requires repairs or maintenance. Maintains accurate records of equipment checks.
    • Sets up incoming animal deliveries. Receives, identifies, and cages newly arrived animals. Verifies animal deliveries against order documentation and submits delivery documentation to supervisor.
    • Drives UT owned carts and vehicles and transports equipment between facilities and pick up equipment and/or animals.
    • May work without onsite supervision on weekends and University holidays as required.
    • Other special projects and duties as assigned.

    Required Qualifications
    • High School diploma or GED and at least three (3) years of experience providing care and handling of animals.
    • Demonstrated experience following basic work instructions.
    • Ability to be flexible and work in different environments, locations, and with different teams.
    • Must possess a valid driver's license and be willing to drive a box truck.
    • Ability to pass a work steps test - standard physical abilities test.

    Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience providing animal care and husbandry to research animals in a university setting.
    • AALAS Certification

    Driving Required

    This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return-to-duty, and follow-up drug and alcohol testing).
