Animal Technician provides daily care for research animals of various species. Cleans and disinfects cages and equipment. Being an Animal Technician monitors the health and well being of the animals, maintains logs of animal diet, behavior, vital signs and other data. Follows standard operating procedures and all biosafety and animal welfare regulations. Additionally, Animal Technician may perform procedures to collect samples. May transport animals to and from laboratories. Requires a high school diploma. May require Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or other certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Animal Technician works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area.     Camden Animal Hospital, an independently owned and operated veterinary practice in Camden, AR, is looking to have an experienced Veterinary Technician to join our team. We are a full service, small animal hospital and we are focused on providing the best possible care to our patients. We want the right people to work with us to create a practice that honors the importance of pets in our lives by ensuring that high level of care, and providing a great experience for our clients, and support for each other.

    The veterinary technician is the doctor’s primary medical support person. They begin

    the examination procedure and continue to assist the doctor throughout the

    examination, diagnosis and treatment phases. They aid the doctors in achieving

    greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail. They

    have a very significant role in communicating with clients about their pets.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Provides compassionate care to patients.
    • Performs all duties in accordance with hospital medical policies and procedures.
    • Prepares and maintains the exam rooms and treatment areas or vehicle.
    • Performs physical examinations; records observations on patients.
    • Assists the doctor in medical, surgical and dental procedures; prepares patients for surgery; assists the doctor in administering anesthesia; monitors patients during surgery and recovery; administers fluids.
    • Gives injections and administers oral medications in accordance with hospital policy.
    • Performs emergency procedures such as control of bleeding, resuscitation with oxygen, opening airways, and external cardiac massage.
    • Assists in restraining pets when necessary.
    • Performs clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation exams, heartworm checks, skin scrapings, urinalysis, and fungal cultures; draws blood for laboratory analysis; maintains file of lab test results and ensures that test results are recorded in patient records.
    • Takes radiographs and administers EKGs and EEGs.
    • Admits and discharges patients on the doctor's orders, ensuring that patients are well groomed and in a medically appropriate state. Counsels clients on various aspects of animal care; explains dosage/purpose of medications; reinforces the proper care and procedures that should be followed at home; makes follow-up calls to clients.
    • Understands usage and dosage for all prescription drugs and can readily explain them to the clients.
    • Properly cleans all surgical materials after they are used; keeps the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery.
    • Maintains an appropriate inventory of all medical supplies as determined by the inventory control system.
    • Assists other staff members as required.
    • Understands and carries out oral and written directions.
    • Maintains positive, cooperative relationships with other employees.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

    EDUCATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:

    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Veterinary Technician Certification desirable but not required.

    EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

    • Minimum of 1 year experience as veterinary technician or assistant preferred.

    PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Genuinely enjoys working with animals and is able to deal with them even when they are stressed or ill or in pain.
    • Can stay calm and efficient during a medical crisis.
    • Is able to work effectively with doctors.
    • Is experienced in the teamwork approach and works well with all hospital staff members.
    • Has excellent client communication skills.
    • Must be able to lift and/or restrain animals weighing over 40 lbs.
    • Must be able to walk or stand for long periods of time, and able to work frequently in a bent position.

    Job Type: Full-time

    Pay: $15.00 - $18.00 per hour
