Animal Technician provides daily care for research animals of various species. Cleans and disinfects cages and equipment. Being an Animal Technician monitors the health and well being of the animals, maintains logs of animal diet, behavior, vital signs and other data. Follows standard operating procedures and all biosafety and animal welfare regulations. Additionally, Animal Technician may perform procedures to collect samples. May transport animals to and from laboratories. Requires a high school diploma. May require Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) or other certification. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Animal Technician works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. Veterinary Technician

  • The veterinary technician is the primary support to doctors and patients. The veterinary technician must be able to pay attention to detail, respond quickly and calmly to crises, and maintain very high standards of patient care. In addition, the veterinary technician must be able to communicate well with clients, showing care and concern for their pets.

    Other responsibilities:

    • Compassionately, calmly and gently approaches and handles patients.
    • Maintains solid grasp of common veterinary medical terminology and is able to converse with other veterinary professional in veterinary terms
    • Understands and provides safe restraint for fractious patients during examination or nursing procedures, including radiographs, ultrasound, blood draw, IVC placements and anesthesia induction. Safely applies e-collar and muzzles.
    • Enters Treatment Plan in Cornerstone according to doctor’s orders for diet, medications, etc. for hospitalized pets.
    • Safely walks or transports post-operative, sick or injured patients.
    • Able to perform venipuncture on the cephalic, lateral saphenous, medial saphenous and jugular veins.
    • Places and maintains peripheral IV catheters.
    • Operates CBC, blood chemistry, electrolyte, SNAP and coag machines.
    • Operates urine and blood centrifuges using optimal coagulation and spin times.
    • Performs blood glucose tests using a glucometer.
    • Obtain, setup and read samples for skin scrapes, ear cytology and blood smears.
    • Performs urine dipstick and specific gravity and able to read sediment.
    • Prepare and read PCV/TP.
    • Administers PO, SQ and IM injections. Administers IV injections.
    • Knows and understands all canine and feline vaccine protocols, including correct areas for injection depending on species.
    • Performs aseptic surgery preparation.
    • Provides stable patient updates to clients and tends to client visits with non-critical patients. Discharges stable patients.
    • Provides consistent, attentive stable patient nursing
    • Calculates basic drug dosages.
    • Induces anesthesia. Performs canine and feline endotracheal intubation and extubation.
    • Performs emergency intubation, chest compressions, manual ventilation and drug administration during CPR.
    • Administers appropriate levels of anesthetic gas. Monitors and troubleshoots anesthetic depth and anesthetic recovery.
    • Monitors and interprets anesthesia monitoring equipment. Heart rate, respiratory rate, SPO2, ECG, capnograph, blood pressure. .
    • Aseptically prepares patient for surgery. Uses aseptic technique for passing instruments and supplies.

    Minimum Education:Associates Degree and Certification by State Recognized Institution
