Police Officer

  • Duties

    • As a Police Officer at the full performance level, you will be responsible for the following:
    • Exercise search and arrest authority, detain witnesses, apprehend suspects, and interview witnesses.
    • Collect and preserve evidence.
    • Conduct long and short-term investigations on criminal cases.
    • Conduct traffic law enforcement patrol using specialized equipment such as radar and breathalyzer.
    • Issues traffic citations.
    • Operate National Crime Information Center terminal in accordance with federal and state laws.

    Requirements

    Conditions of Employment

    • Incumbent must be able to successfully pass training, certification and qualification requirements related to law enforcement work functions as prescribed by policy, regulations or statutes.
    • This position is subject to the provisions of the Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban commonly referred to as the Lautenberg Amendment.
    • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
    • A pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter is required to ensure the continued, required level of physical and mental health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
    • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
    • Incumbent must pass, within 90 days of being hired and annually thereafter, a physical agility test IAW AR 190-56, Chapter 2.
    • This position is covered by the Individual Reliability Program (IRP) and has been designated by the Department of Army as critical to the national or internal security.
    • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
    • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
    • Incumbent must meet the requirements of AR 190-56 to include the requirement to wear a uniform and maintain a high state of uniform appearance and personal hygiene.
    • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
    • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
    • This position is subject to a criminal history background check.
    • Incumbent is subject to possible civil action due to improper exercises of authority injudicious use of force in the apprehension or detention of individuals.
    • The work requires extended periods of physical exertion derived from such activities as running, walking, and occasionally lifting, pushing and/or carrying items weighing 50 pounds or more.
    • The incumbent may be required to push or drag heavy weights of 150 pounds or more and defend oneself or others against physical attack.
    • The work involves moderate and high risks and possible endangerment of life or serious injury that requires the exercise of safety precautions and use of personal protective equipment such as ballistic vests, gloves, boots, goggles, and masks.
    • Position requires the incumbent to successfully graduate from the United States Army Civilian Police Academy within 12 months of hire date unless grandfathered or exempt.

    In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.     To Qualify for the GS 06 Level:
    Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes applying laws and regulations to law enforcement or armed security operations and responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

    To Qualify for the GS 07 level:
    Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes applying law enforcement laws and regulations to police operations, practices and techniques; assisting with law enforcement investigations; and responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

    Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone - no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

    This is a developmental position and may be filled at either the GS-06, or GS-07 level. If the position is filled at the GS-06 level, the incumbent may be non-competitively promoted to GS-07 pending time-in-grade requirements and demonstrated ability to perform the next level/grade duties and required training.
