    Department Summary

    The Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art opened its doors to the public in the fall of 1996 and has grown to be one of the major cultural centers in the region. In 2008, RAFFMA was granted accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums, recognizing our continuing commitment to excellence. Since 2008, RAFFMA has hosted many exhibitions by artists from all over the world and boasts the largest collection of Egyptian antiquities in Southern California encompassing artifacts from early dynasties through the 26th Dynasty.

    Vision: RAFFMA is dedicated to serving as a vibrant resource for the campus and community at large to stimulate curiosity and wonder. Through diligent efforts and partnerships, the museum makes an expanding contribution to the development of visual culture.

    Mission: RAFFMA offers meaningful cultural experiences through art exhibitions and educational programs aimed at engaging and inspiring local, national, and international audiences. The Museum adheres to the highest standard of museum stewardship in collections, documentation, preservation, interpretation, and exhibition.

    Job Summary

    Reporting directly to the Dean of the College of Arts and Letters, the Director has the responsibility for and the authority over the management and coordination of the Museum's operations, collections, exhibitions, and finances. The Director oversees and collaborates with staff in their activities to implement plans and expand the Museum's programs and facilities. The Director serves as advocate and spokesperson, effectively representing the Museum and its possibilities to individuals as well as to public and private entities while attracting and maintaining wide interest and support. The Director engages in research, exhibitions, curatorial work, scholarship, community outreach, and supports CSUSB's strategic plan and institutional value in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion through museum's exhibitions and activities, and broadens the museum's service and connection to various units on campus and to the region.

    Responsibilities include, but is not limited to:

    Operations and Management

    Oversees the effective management and daily operations of the museum staff (Exhibition Designer, Education and Collections Coordinator, Marketing, Membership and Engagement Coordinator, Visitor Services Coordinator, Research Egyptologist, and Exhibition Preparator), as well as supervising interns, and student assistants. Helps define priorities of work and communicates these parameters to all staff involved. Prepares and administers the annual budget and any capital budget to ensure that appropriate systems, procedures, and financial controls are in place. In partnership with staff, prepares grant applications and manages grant projects. Ensures exhibitions are properly installed and that they align with institutional values. Manages community outreach activities, oversees lecture series and events, and promotes name recognition of the museum. Leads museum acquisition processes and conservation efforts.

    Strategic Planning

    Assists with leadership, strategic initiative, and management of all fund-raising efforts. Creates and coordinates programs to increase the organization's support base among individuals, grants, corporations, charitable foundations, and additional sources. Represents RAFFMA and advocates its mission to external stakeholders and audiences including community organizations, schools, government at all levels, as well as other museum and nonprofit communities. Collaborates with the Dean and Director of Philanthropy for the College in locating, identifying, approaching, and soliciting major donors for annual and capital gifts in addition to writing grants. Cultivates external support for the museum's activities and collections. Identifies and initiates opportunities that are consistent with the overall mission and goals of the Museum that will provide earned revenue. Provides the organizational vision, personal leadership, and long-range strategic planning for the Museum's financial stability, growth, and long-term development.

    Partnerships and Collaboration

    Builds effective relationships with various on- and off-campus communities of at CSUSB. Initiates and develops strong working relationships with the surrounding community of the Inland Empire. Serves as the liaison between the Museum staff and RAFFMA Board of Advocates (not a governing board). Informs and guides the Board of the Museum's needs and goals. Assists with recruiting volunteers for appropriate positions within the organization. Collaborates with the department of Art and Design in opportunities for faculty exhibitions, undergraduate and graduate students including MFA thesis exhibitions in the Museum Student Gallery. Collaborates with the Department of History in relation to the Egyptian antiquities collection and W. Benson Harer Egyptology Scholar in Residence, History Department Visiting Faculty. Develops and secures relationships with other museums, institutions, curators, artists, collectors, and donors.

    Exhibitions and Collections

    Creates and maintains standards of excellence for all collections (permanent collection currently consists of: 40% Ancient Egyptian, 20% Additional Antiquities, 40% Contemporary), exhibitions, and education efforts of the museum. Oversees the proper care of the collections in accordance with the American Alliance of Museums standards. Oversees exhibitions to support the mission of the organization to attract audiences, donors, and sponsors. Recruits and works closely with guest curators, artists, and exhibition designer for future museum exhibitions. On occasion, is responsible for curating exhibitions. Leads the Museum Acquisition Committee in establishing larger strategic objectives, such as cultivating donors or raising funds for new acquisitions that address the goals and needs of the collection. Works closely with University Advancement and Donor(s) to complete necessary documents in acquiring artifacts into the collection.

    Employment Status: Full-time, At-Will, 'Exempt' position, included in the Management Personnel Plan (MPP).

    Work Schedule

    Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, weekends and evenings may be required.

    • Ability to manage multiple projects independently in a fast-paced organization with competing priorities and distractions.
    • Strong critical thinking, analytical, research, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
    • Ability to build effective teams through goal setting, defining responsibilities, empowering team members, providing feedback, and adhering to deadlines.
    • Ability to use high-level discretion and maintain a high level of confidentiality in handling problems of a sensitive nature and security of confidential records.
    • Working knowledge of and ability to operate standard office equipment and technology including, but not limited to, desktop computer, laptop, copier, fax machine, scanner, and printer.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in ability to effectively use common computer and technology programs and related computer software packages (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, Zoom, etc.) in the course of assigned duties.

    Education and Experience
    • A masters degree in an appropriate field is required (museum studies, art history, archeology, anthropology, public history, public administration, historic preservation, or related fields).
    • A minimum of five years of museum or cultural resource management experience.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • A doctorate degree in an appropriate field is preferred (museum studies, art history, archeology, anthropology, public history, public administration, historic preservation, or related fields).
    • Ability to understand the Museum's mission and professional standards in a diverse and growing regional university. Ability to understand of how a university museum's mission and professional standards align with the interests of diverse regional constituents.
    • Strong ability to supervise and understand CSU policies and procedures relating to supervisory needs.

    Anticipated Hiring Range: $54,996 - $165,000 annually
