Assistant Principal Special Education Schools
REPORTS TO: Principal
DEPARTMENT: Special Education
POSITION OVERVIEW
The primary responsibility of the Assistant Principal is to assist the principal in implementing the school’s educational programs by providing instructional leadership to the total school community.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assists the principal in the overall administration of the school, including: implementation of district policy; preparation of the master schedule; supervision of instructional activities; creating a positive instructional climate; monitoring of the grading system within each department; supervising and evaluating the instructional staff in accordance with PBTE; reviewing credentials and qualifications of teacher applications; screening, interviewing and recommending placement of applications; administering procedures, assignments and memberships of advisory committees; providing administrative liaison with LEAs; acting as a liaison between the administrator in charge of curriculum and the school; acting as liaison between the school and the community; processing instructional equipment and supply requests; screening building use permits; processing capital outlay requests; maintaining the school’s records; the safe functioning of the physical plant; supervising all assigned certified and non-certified personnel; supervising of student conduct with respect to individual rights; and supervising and evaluating the school’s extracurricular program.
Assists the principal in the implementation of curriculum and IEPs.
Assists and supervises teachers in preparing curriculum materials and in the development and implementation of instructional techniques.
Prepares and implements pre-service and in-service training of instructional staff.
Assists with meetings and conferences at the school (faculty, staff assemblies, etc.); graduation activities including rehearsals and commencement; school inventories and reports of excess equipment, theft and vandalism, and sponsorships for other student activities.
Schedules and implements emergency drills.
Processes equipment repair requests and supervises equipment repairpersons.
Assists in the preparation of the school’s budget as it relates to curriculum development and textbook adoptions.
Approves professional development and field trip requests.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Coordinates school volunteer/observation requests.
Assists in the coordination/implementation of ESY.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Minimum of five years of teaching experience in a special education classroom setting required.
Experience teaching students with severe cognitive and emotional needs required.
Prior school administrative experience preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Missouri special education teacher certification required
Missouri principal certification, at the appropriate grade level(s), required
Missouri special education administrator certification required
