    The Engineering Management Program at the University of Kansas (KU) is housed in the School of Professional Studies, which is located on the KU Edwards Campus (KUEC) in Overland Park, Kansas in the Kansas City Metropolitan area. KUEC has been a KU presence in Kansas City for 30 years, playing a crucial role in the Greater Kansas City professional community. The campus now offers more than 80 undergraduate and graduate degrees and certificates with classes geared toward working professionals, available in the evening, online and in-person.

    The Engineering Management Department seeks an outstanding individual for a non-tenure track twelve-month faculty position as an Assistant Professor of the Practice in our graduate Engineering Management (EMGT) program. Exceptionally qualified candidates will be considered at advanced levels.

    The successful candidate will have a professional record in engineering management (with a strong background in industrial engineering, operations research, systems engineering, or decision science), exceptional communication skills, and a demonstrated commitment to educating and developing future engineering managers. The ideal candidate will have a developed teaching philosophy and a demonstrated desire to inspire students and encourage lifelong learning. As a Professor of Practice, the successful candidate has an obligation to maintain a consistent record of distinction through professional activities within the department and community. This position reports to the Director of Graduate Programs in Engineering Management.

    This faculty position is expected to teach graduate courses leading to the M.S in Engineering Management plus associated graduate certificates. The candidate will be expected to teach at least eight graduate courses per academic year in engineering management - especially those courses related to industrial engineering, systems engineering, operations research, and the decision sciences. The candidate will be expected to teach in various formats such as in-person, hybrid, and online. The program is based at the Edwards Campus in Overland Park, Kansas.

    The appointment is a Fiscal Year (12-month) appointment with an initial term of 3 years, with a course load of 3 classes each fall and spring semester and 2 courses each summer semester. Subsequent appointments may be offered, contingent upon a satisfactory comprehensive performance evaluation during the final year of this appointment and approval of the Dean of the School of Professional Studies.

    Job Description
    Teaching (80%)
    Teach three courses each Fall and Spring semester and two courses in the Summer semester in the Master of Science in Engineering Management program in the School of Professional Studies. Teaching responsibilities include curriculum development, instructional design, virtual classroom management, and grading and teaching improvement. Faculty are responsible for keeping curricula up-to-date and engaging with external organizations to ensure relevance to a variety of workplace needs. Faculty are also responsible for providing adequate means to evaluate student performance, including examinations and assignments (such as papers, projects, presentations, etc.), and grading.

    Professional Service (20%)
    Provide academic, curricular, and programmatic leadership advice to the department. Develop and enhance course curriculum. Participate in academic advising and monitoring student progression. Promote initiatives related to student recruitment and retention including potential activities associated with developing student and alumni newsletters, revisions to the department web page, and conducting surveys of alumni. Contribute to decisions made related to the educational aspect of the EMGT program regarding quality assurance and marketing. Act as departmental liaison with regional engineering firms, professional societies, and the EMGT advisory board.
    Required Qualifications
    1. Master's Degree in Engineering, Engineering Management, Technology Management, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Systems Engineering, Decision Science, or equivalent. A master's degree in other fields may be considered if combined with three or more years of professional management experience directly relevant to the teaching assignment.
    2. Years of related professional experience required for each rank:
      • Assistant Professor of the Practice: 3-5 years
      • Associate Professor of the Practice: 6-15 years
      • Professor of the Practice: 16 years
    3. Teaching experience in engineering management, industrial engineering, operations research, systems engineering, or decision science.
    4. Excellence in written communication skills as demonstrated in application materials.
    Preferred Qualifications
    1. A Doctoral degree is strongly preferred, especially in industrial engineering, operations research, systems engineering, decision science, or a closely related field.
    2. Distinguished record of accomplishment (e.g., leadership role in industry or consultancy, etc.).
    3. Professional certifications, such as:
      • CPEM certification from the American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM) or another engineering/technical management-related professional certification.
      • Systems Engineering Professional (SEP) certification from the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE).
    4. Professional engineering (PE) license.
    5. Involvement in relevant industry associations and community.
