    Position description

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (https://science.ucsc.edu/department/chemistry/) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), as part of the Global and Community Health Initiative, invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in chemical biology at the Assistant Professor level. Applicants should be able to contribute to the department's focus areas of chemical biology, natural products chemistry, organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry, or pharmacology. We seek candidates with expertise in chemical biology, applied organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry, or computational chemistry as applied to the design of novel drugs, chemical probes, or biomaterials. We seek candidates with a strong background and publication record in chemical biology, and whose projected research program will address questions at the interface of chemistry and biology.

We seek scholars with the capacity to teach topics in organic chemistry and chemical biology at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including supervision and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the teaching, research, and service missions of the department: by the creation of an innovative research program with a strong extramural funding base, teaching and mentoring a diverse population of students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and providing service and leadership to the campus and the international scientific community. It is anticipated that the research program of the successful candidate will benefit from divisional core facilities including (but not limited to) CryoEM, NMR, Chemical Screening Center, X-ray, and mass spectrometry.

UCSC is distinguished by our high-impact research and our commitment to diversity, social justice, the environment, and educational opportunity. We welcome candidates who understand the barriers facing women and minoritized scientists who are underrepresented in higher education careers (as evidenced by life experiences and educational background), and who have experience in equity and diversity with respect to teaching, mentoring, research, life experiences, or service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. UCSC is committed to addressing the holistic needs of faculty. We also welcome applications from those who have had non-traditional career paths, who have taken time off for personal reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia.

This job description provides a portrait of an ideal candidate. Candidates who possess many, though perhaps not all, qualifications are encouraged to apply.

The chosen candidate will be expected to sign a statement representing that they are not the subject of any ongoing investigation or disciplinary proceeding at their current academic institution or place of employment, nor have they in the past ten years been formally disciplined at any academic institution/place of employment. In the event the candidate cannot make this representation, they will be expected to disclose in writing to the hiring Dean the circumstances surrounding any formal discipline that they have received, as well as any current or ongoing investigation or disciplinary process of which they are the subject.
