Job Description:
The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) employs nearly 2,300 team members operating nine institutions, which house approximately 5,200 inmates, statewide. DUTIES:
Under general direction, administers social work services for a social work department in a multi-disciplinary facility. Incumbents direct a staff of social workers providing social work services in an active treatment setting and perform planning and policy development functions. Work is performed under the direction of the medical director.
Determines the philosophy, objectives, policies, procedures, and standards for social work services within the facilities.
Assigns, authorizes, and manages social work staff to meet patient care needs for social work services and to meet institutional certification, accreditation, and licensing standards and regulations.
Directs the provision of clinical psychiatric social work services, psychosocial evaluations, psychotherapy, discharge planning, and social work services to families.
Develops, administers, and evaluates a client advocacy program for the facility.
Provides education to NDCS staff about social work services within the facilities.
Coordinates the activities of the social work department with other departments and management staff.
Plans and monitors budgetary issues for the social work department.
Coordinates services and conducts problem solving and planning activities with community mental health centers and other aftercare resources to assure continuity of care for clients transitioning to the community.
Establishes and maintains a quality assurance program and privilege process for social work activities within the facility.
Coordinates with academic social work programs to provide training and practicum experience for students.
Represents the facility in presenting social work activities to the public and to private groups.
May conduct individual and/or group counseling/therapy sessions.
May provide individual, group, and family psychotherapy, supportive psychosocial therapy, client and family education, family support groups and management sessions, and crisis intervention.
Contributes to the multi-disciplinary treatment planning team, representing the client, family, and community care workers from the social work perspective.
Oversees case management activities including the solution of financial, health, educational, recreational, employment, personal, and family problems and the development of patient treatment plans.
Actively participates in discharge planning to assist clients in exercising their maximum choice of alternatives, contacting aftercare agencies to plan client aftercare, supporting clients and families in working through the legal system, coordinating with other disciplines to ensure continuity of care communications.
Completes data to determine psychosocial patient service needs and the effectiveness of various social work programs.
Participates in facility management committees as required.
REQUIREMENTS: Master's degree in Social Work with certification in Social Work and five years of post MSW social work experience in the field of employment, three years of which include supervisory experience. Certification by the Nebraska Department of Health as a Master's degree Social Worker is required.
OTHER: Must have a valid driver's license. Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam, and at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NE Corrections Training Program.
Knowledge of: advanced levels of social work practice, theories, and methods; advanced levels of research methods; advanced levels of planning methods; management systems; teaching methods.
Ability to: effectively administer a major social work program; project future budgetary needs and to determine budget effects on current programs; utilize constructive criticism.
Skill in: planning, organizing, and time management; mobilizing community resources for acceptance of clients for aftercare; communicating social work needs for the purpose of obtaining appropriate funding and management support.
