    PURPOSE:

    Under the administrative direction of the Vice President for Enrollment Management &Student Affairs, the Associate Vice President/Dean of Students is responsible for oversight of Student Life. Student Life includes Student Conduct; Student Activities & Leadership Development; Orientation & First Year Programs; Student Organizations; Greek Life; Associated Students; and Student Recreation.

    This senior leadership appointment is involved in crisis planning and coordinating, and provides a unique opportunity to influence the climate for the student experience. In the absence of the Vice President, the AVP has the authority to make decisions of significance for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

    1. Provides leadership and vision for the student life functional areas. Assures compliance with appropriate federal, state, and institutional policies as well as professional ethical standards in all areas of functional responsibility.

    2. Collaborate with students, faculty, and staff to foster student leadership and excellence in the learning, social and civic environment. Supports the VP for Enrollment Management and Student Affairs in providing leadership and responsibility for oversight of the student discipline system, alternative means to resolving conflicts, crisis management, campus-wide student activity programming, and interpreting University policies. Keeps the VPEMSA informed on any student-related issues through its conclusion.

    3. Oversees the development of a student community that is responsive to student needs, and that fosters the intellectual cultural, social, and interpersonal growth of students through leadership, program and engagement opportunities, dedicated staff and proactive advising. Provides leadership for Student Life functions that promote civility and an inclusive campus climate. Provides leadership for the development and implementation of technology and communication efforts and projects. Provides leadership in developing parent program/communications and related grant opportunities.

    4. Reports to the Vice President of Enrollment Management & Student Affairs, and collaborates with the Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Leadership Team in strategic planning, professional development, budget/fiscal management, continuous quality improvement, policy development and implementation, and advancing diversity efforts. Serves as Student Affairs representative in planning for major capital improvement projects, renovations and new construction projects related to student housing, student center, student activities, dining services, etc.

    5. Works directly with Academic Affairs Leadership and Faculty/Academic Senate; serves on various committees as needed (supporting student retention and graduation rate improvement and initiatives).

    6. Develops the program outcomes for all student life functional areas, monitors assessment of those outcomes, and develops plans of action for improvement based on the assessment of those outcomes.

    7. Develops, implements, monitors and revises policies and procedures relating to the student life functional area in collaboration with the VPEMSA.

    8. Chairs or serve on appropriate committees including, but not limited to: the Student Fee Advisory Committee, and the Critical Incident Response Team. Serves in a significant leadership role on other campus committees including, but not limited to the CARE Management and Behavior Intervention Teams, Strategic Budget Advisory Committee, Commencement Planning Committee, and other standing campus-wide committees as needed.

    Other Functions:

    Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    Thorough knowledge of: best practices in American higher education administration and leadership, student personnel services, student development theory and student learning outcomes, student co-curricular retention models and practices; organizational development. Working knowledge of: principles, issues, and methods of public administration, including organization, personnel and fiscal management procedures; staff selection, development, and management in a collective bargaining environment; leadership development; computer applications in Student Affairs administration. General knowledge of laws and contract issues related to student life, residential services, and employment. Thorough understanding of the academic support needs of developing first-generation students from culturally diverse and historically underserved communities. Knowledge and experience working successfully and providing leadership within a culturally diverse higher education setting.

    Skilled in: strategic planning, goal development, and outcomes assessment within the context of divisional and university plans; consultative and collaborative decision making; leadership development; conflict resolution; developing community among college students, effectively leading various areas of Student Affairs to strengthen the student life experience; residential and co-curricular learning program development in a multi-cultural environment; modeling and training for civility and strong intra-group and intergroup relations.

    Ability to: think critically and independently interpret and apply codes of rules, regulations, procedures, precedent cases and policies related to the full range of Student Affairs including, Student Activities & Leadership Development, Student Center management, learn the purposes, organization, structure, major programs, and related policies of the California State University system and CSUMB; administer and forecast budgets; communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; benchmark with comparable colleges and universities; develop new, innovative and effective support services for students; use supervisory principles, practices, and techniques to accomplish results through delegation and motivation; work collaboratively in the development and administration of program areas; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships in a diverse, academic environment.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    A master's degree from an accredited college or university AND seven (7) years of increasingly responsible management experience in Student Affairs. Demonstrated leadership and management experience in more than one Student Affairs functional area. Experience in a diverse higher education environment.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:

    Ph.D./Ed.D. (or in progress) Must have strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills. Experience with program development, working with university auxiliary services; working in a collective bargaining environment; utilizing innovations in technology to enhance operations in Student Affairs. Highly desirable: demonstrated knowledge of creative and innovative programs which enhance the relationships between academic affairs and student life.

    Technical fluency with Oracle/PeopleSoft, CSU Common Management System or equivalent student information system; Microsoft Office Professional Suite, and Google mail and calendaring programs.

    PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:

    Office environment with standard equipment and tasks. The position requires working at a computer and desk for extended periods of time. May require travel between campus offices and off-campus locations.
