    Job Description:

    The Associate Dean for Curricular Affairs will supervise, advise, and provide leadership of the activities of the Office of Curricular Affairs. As the senior academic officer, the Associate Dean is responsible for the overall conduct and supervision of the undergraduate medical education program to ensure quality and oversee full compliance with LCME accreditation standards. The candidate plays a pivotal role in aligning academic and operational processes within the School of Medicine and has primary responsibility for the development, implementation, and evaluation of our integrative curriculum across UME. We seek an accomplished and visionary leader with expertise in curriculum development and evaluation, knowledge of evidence-based and active learning methodologies including case-based teaching and has an interest in educational research and scholarship. The ideal candidate will work closely with the core teaching faculty, curriculum coordinators, Assistant Deans for Education, and other stakeholders to ensure that the curriculum goals are met, the curriculum principles are supported by appropriate pedagogies, the supporting learning activities and technologies are of high quality, and that the assessment of student learning is meaningful. The Associate Dean for Curricular Affairs reports to the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs.

    Major Responsibilities/Essential Functions Specific to the Position:

    • Directs and oversees the Office of Curricular Affairs (OCA) staff.
    • Provides strategic leadership and advice to the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs on all matters of the undergraduate medical education (UME program).
    • Acts as the senior administrative officer providing supervision to undergraduate medical education, including responsibility for the day-to-day operational management of the OCA and programming. Shares fiduciary responsibility for the annual planning and execution of funds and budgets of the OCA.
    • Works collaboratively with the Senior Director of Assessment and Evaluation and the Director of Institutional Effectiveness, Continuous Quality Improvement and Accreditation to support the full accreditation status of the MD program in accordance with accreditation requirements of the program by contributing, meeting, and exceeding all accreditation standards for medical education.
    • Maintains strong academic, evidence-based, and pedagogical standards for undergraduate medical education.
    • Oversees course evaluations and program outcomes and addresses issues that do not meet stated AWSOM standards. Ensures program evaluation is aligned with accreditation standards and data needs
    • Anticipates and responds to changes in accreditation requirements and advances in medical education.
    • Maintains quality of curriculum and leads improvement efforts.
    • Conducts and publishes educational research.
    • Contributes to faculty development in areas related to education and assessment.
    • Works with the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs to create a positive and effective learning environment.
    • Oversees the AAMC surveys including the Year Two Questionnaire, and Graduation Questionnaire
    • Serves as ex-officio member of the Curriculum Committee and subcommittees
    • Carries out recommendations of the Curriculum Committee
    • Performs related duties as required or assigned by the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs

    Required Qualifications and Experience

    • MD, PhD, or equivalent degree and a minimum of 10 years of experience with medical student education at an LCME-accredited US medical School
    • Currently an associate or full professor
    • Ability to effectively multitask

    • Prior experience with LCME
    • Demonstrated experience with conflict resolution and excellent interpersonal skills with students, faculty, and staff

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master's or PhD/EdD in higher education and adult learning theory in addition to the MD, PhD, or equivalent degree

    About Us!

    Founded in 2021 by philanthropist Alice Walton, the School of Medicine will offer a medical degree-granting program that builds on conventional medicine with an inclusive, compassionate, and whole health approach. The School of Medicine embraces self-care to empower students to care for their patients and themselves and helps them rise to the health challenges of the 21st century with a focus on mental, physical, social, and emotional health. The School will have an attached clinic for training in these concepts. Currently, the School of Medicine seeks to be a national medical school with the goal of welcoming its inaugural class in 2025, pending programmatic and institutional accreditation.

    Construction of the 154,000 square-foot building has begun with the goal of completing and welcoming the first class in Fall 2025, pending accreditation. AWSOM will be located east of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.
