    Position description

    The University of California San Diego (UC San Diego) Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences is committed to academic excellence, and to enhancing access, inclusion, and success of our diverse faculty, staff, and students is recruiting an Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean in our School of Medicine.

    The Dean is responsible for leading the School of Medicine's overall strategic vision; developing and implementing initiatives that enhance teaching, research, and clinical care across its multiple departments and units; and establishing collaborative partnerships across campus and the community to advance its goals of educating compassionate, skillful, knowledgeable students. The Dean serves a critical role of creating a diverse community of scholars who push the boundaries of scientific discovery and develop innovative therapies that will transform the lives of patients locally and nationally.

    The Dean must have broad and diverse leadership skills to manage a highly complex organization. In addition to having the ability to collaborate in close partnership with the leadership of the School's departments, the Dean must foster strong relationships with senior campus administrators at UC San Diego, the University of California Regents and Office of the President, and a diverse set of faculty, staff, and students at the School of Medicine. The Dean serves as the School's chief recruitment officer, ensuring UC San Diego draws exceptional faculty and administrative leaders to enhance its academic and research programs. The Dean will represent the School of Medicine and UC San Diego effectively; build strong relationships with internal and external constituents, and be an effective advocate for the School.

    Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, the Dean has oversight of a multimillion dollar budget that includes both central resources and department funds. The Dean works in close partnership with the Vice Chancellor's Office on evaluating, planning, and/or advocating for major capital and programmatic investments to enhance the School's missions while maintaining fiscal solvency.

    When applicable, the Dean engages the UC San Diego Health CEO, Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, and Chancellor on cross-campus investments.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
    Strategic Planning

    * Sets the overarching vision for the School of Medicine in a manner that integrates the education, research, and clinical missions.
    * Leads long-range strategic planning efforts for the School of Medicine, including establishing school-wide priorities, in alignment with the strategic plans of UC San Diego Health Sciences and UC San Diego Health.
    * Identifies areas of strategic investment that advance the School's tripartite mission and works in partnership with Health Sciences leadership to secure appropriate funding sources.
    * Leverages relationships with internal leaders to launch and/or strengthen multidisciplinary academic, research, and clinical programs.
    * Establishes partnerships with key external academic, research, and clinical organizations, both locally and nationally, to strengthen and expand the School of Medicine's reputation.
    * Advocates for financial resources on behalf of the School of Medicine to the UC San Diego Health CEO, Vice Chancellor-Health Sciences, and Chancellor, as appropriate.

    Administrative Management

    * Recruits, mentors, and evaluates all senior leaders in the School of Medicine.
    * Serves as direct supervisor to the Academic Department Chairs and Vice Deans, among others (see below); oversees the School's administrative offices.
    * Reviews and recommends academic appointments in the School of Medicine to the Committee on Academic Personnel
    * In collaboration with the Vice Chancellor-Health Sciences, builds relationships with the philanthropic community and working to secure principal-level gifts toward medical education, biomedical research, and/or groundbreaking clinical care.
    * Exercises final authority over the establishment and implementation of policies within the School of Medicine, in accordance with existing University of California policies.
    * Manages the method and distribution of state FTEs to departments within the School of Medicine.
    * Responsible for the operational excellence and financial management of the School of Medicine and its academic and administrative units, in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and professional standards.
    * Oversees the School of Medicine's overall budget, including evaluating and approving major capital and programmatic investments to enhance the School's education, research, and clinical missions while maintaining fiscal solvency. Reviews and approves departmental budgets.
    * In partnership with the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer, UC San Diego Health CEO (when appropriate), and Chancellor, approves funding of cross-campus initiatives.
    * Acts as final authority for organizational issues that span multiple department/units in the School of Medicine.

    Committee Service
    * Chairs the School of Medicine Council of Chairs and serves as a member of the Vice Chancellor-Health Sciences' Cabinet.
    * Participates as a member of key Health System committees, including the Board of Governors and the UC San Diego Heath Executive Governing Board.
    * Represents the School of Medicine to the University of California's Health Services Committee and participates in University-wide committees as requested by the Regents, Office of the President, Office of the UC San Diego Chancellor, or Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences.
    * Participates in the Council of Health Sciences Deans and Chairs.
    * Represents UC San Diego locally, nationally, and internationally to associations and organizations such as the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American Medical Association.

    Senior administrative positions at UC San Diego Health Sciences are considered at-will. This position will have annual performance reviews with a formal committee review every fifth year.

    Qualifications
    Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

    * MD or equivalent medical degree. If a clinical appointment is required, must also have or be eligible for a California medical license or equivalent certification/permit as determined by the Medical Board of California.
    * 15 years of leadership skills with a high level of conceptual and strategic thinking.
    * 15 years of a personal record of distinguished academic or research (basic, translational, and/or clinical) achievement

    Preferred qualifications

    * Outstanding academic record with experience as a senior administrator in an academic medical center environment.
    * Demonstrated success in managing and leading a complex organization undergoing significant and persistent change, with the ability to innovate and generate new ideas.
    * Demonstrated success in enhancing the research agenda of an academic unit or program, in responding to faculty needs and building environments that enhance research innovation, and in building programs and environments that enhance research productivity.
    * Demonstrated ability and proven success in generating external funding, including private fundraising for the School.
    * Demonstrated ability to build a sense of community and to actively engage faculty, staff, students, and alumni in support of a shared strategic vision.
    Demonstrated record of exceptional recruitment and visionary hires that elevate the success of a unit, and mentoring leadership development
    * Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills; the ability to listen attentively to varied perspectives and foster a supportive and collaborative working environment.
    * A collegial, consultative management style, with the ability to be strong and decisive while also taking into account the needs and perspectives of faculty, staff, and students. The ability to collaborate and to delegate along with the ability to make difficult and timely decisions based on well-considered input.
    * A history of fostering career development for early and mid-stage faculty across multiple disciplines.
