  • Purpose:

    The Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education is responsible for overseeing university-wide undergraduate education initiatives that support and enhance the undergraduate student academic experience and executes the mission of inspiring undergraduate students to become engaged citizens and well-rounded scholars prepared to act in a diverse world.

    This position reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, and will be responsible for overseeing the programs, services, and initiatives of the Office of Undergraduate Education, within the Division of Academic Affairs. This position provides direction to and responsibility for developing innovative new university-wide programs that serve and support undergraduate students. This academic leader will coordinate, develop, and implement academic policies and procedures related to undergraduate education. The Associate Provost works closely with the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs in all areas related to undergraduate curriculum, orientation programming, retention, and the implementation of technology designed to specifically improve the quality of services and information available to staff and students with the specific intent for enhancing student success at the undergraduate level, with emphasis on the first and second year of the student undergraduate experience at Lincoln University.

    Furthermore, the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education will lead efforts in consultation with the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs in the development of a proven-practice model for academic advising and strategic impact and focus on undergraduate student success. This may include the creation of a Freshmen or University College model, where the Associate Provost will also be required for leading. In addition, this role will provide leadership for the Honors Program, Undergraduate Research, the Academic Success Center, International Education, and development of the Office of Civic Engagement and Service-Learning.

    Essential Job Functions:

    • Serves as a member of the Academic Affairs Leadership Team, reporting directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.
    • Provides leadership for university-wide undergraduate academic success initiatives.
    • Reviews and supports the University's general education requirements and promotes undergraduate student learning outcomes.
    • Works collaboratively with the Division of Student Affairs to ensure cohesion in student programming and student success initiatives that support and complement the teaching and learning process.
    • Provides leadership for the successful design and implementation of the Honors Program and its integration into the existing undergraduate academic curriculum.
    • Oversees the Academic Success Center and its full integration within the University's structure for supporting student academic needs.
    • Strategizes and leads the development of a comprehensive international education program and its required services.
    • Coordinates training sessions and organizes consistent and effective academic advising processes and protocols for all undergraduate students.
    • Promotes the importance of freshmen seminar courses and the necessity to elevate the first-year experience to impact first to second-year retention rates.
    • Works with academic affairs staff and faculty to create and enhance the second-year experience preparing this student population for success in the junior and senior year of the undergraduate experience.
    • Promotes undergraduate research and innovation and oversees the programs that facilitate students' engagement in these areas.
    • Collaborates with other offices and units to facilitate the development and continued success of new and existing curricular and co-curricular activities that encourage student-faculty engagement and interaction, and that enhances intellectual development and learning beyond the classroom.
    • Plans and provides programs and services to support students in achieving their academic goals and developing those goals into successful, strategic, and achievable benchmarks.
    • Leads the academic appeals and readmission committees, supporting student success in this area.
    • Collaborates with Faculty Athletics Representatives on advising, academic support and other academic issues for student-athletes.

    Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Provide leadership for the Honors Program, Undergraduate Research, the Academic Success Center, International Education, and development of the Community and Service-Learning.

    Qualifications:

    • A minimum of seven years of experience in higher education.
    • A history of progressively responsible, successful experience as an academic administrator at the department chair, director, assistant/associate dean, or dean level or above involving the support of undergraduate students, academic success programs, including responsibility for budget, personnel recruitment, strategy development and evaluation is required.
    • Experience in academic program/initiative design and planning, assessment of program effectiveness, and development of academic policies to enhance the overall student academic experience.
    • A demonstrated commitment to the promotion of diversity is required.
    • Experience as a tenured faculty member at the associate level or above is desirable, but not necessarily required.
    • Successful experience in securing and managing external grants and other funding is required.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Personal Characteristics:

    • Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
    • An understanding of emerging technologies and the effective application of instructional technologies to enhance student success outcomes is required.
    • An understanding of contemporary issues in higher education.
    • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development of teams.
    • Proven interest and application of student development theory in higher education, complemented by an understanding of current trends in student success.
    • Knowledge and appreciation for historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs).
    • Commitment to professionalism which includes professional decorum, dress, and etiquette.

    Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:

    • An earned terminal degree is required.

    Physical Demands:

    • Extensive contact with campus and community.
    • Academic Office setting, controlled environment.
    • Light sedentary office work.
    • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working at a computer.
    • Ability to lift 25 lbs.
