About Project Chimps:
At Project Chimps, we have a profound mission—to provide lifelong sanctuary and promote the well-being of chimpanzees retired from research facilities. Our sanctuary is a haven for these intelligent and social animals, where they can experience comfort, care, and freedom. We are a passionate team dedicated to making a difference, and we need a skilled and compassionate Veterinary Medical Director to join us on this transformative journey.
Position Overview:
As the Veterinary Medical Director at Project Chimps, you will play a central role in ensuring the health and happiness of our chimpanzee residents. This is not just a job; it's a calling—a chance to make a lasting impact on the lives of these remarkable beings. Reporting to the Executive Director, you will be an essential member of our chimpanzee care team, providing expert veterinary care and leading our medical program. As you supervise the Vet Assistant and collaborate with medical volunteers (including RN, DDS, DVM, PA, MDs, and more), you'll create a harmonious and nurturing environment where our chimpanzees can thrive.
Your Impact:
Your expertise in veterinary medicine will be the foundation of our chimpanzee care. From performing daily rounds to reading diagnostics and prescribing treatments, you'll be the guardian of their well-being. Your caring and compassionate approach will set the standards for medical care, ensuring that our sanctuary maintains the highest levels of care, as required by USDA, DNR, and GFAS.
As you design and implement wellness plans for our chimpanzee residents, in collaboration with the Chimpanzee Care Supervisors and Behavior Coordinator, you'll contribute to their overall physical and emotional health. You'll mentor volunteers and interns, instilling your passion and knowledge in the next generation of animal advocates.
Qualifications:
To fulfill this vital role, you must possess a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine and be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Georgia. Your passion for zoo/exotic/primate medicine, with a minimum of three years' experience, is essential, while five years' experience is preferred, particularly in primate or great ape medicine. Your working knowledge of chimpanzee health and husbandry procedures will be an invaluable asset.
Your leadership skills and collaborative approach will be vital as you work within a team, evaluating and promoting dedicated volunteers. As you maintain medical records and ensure administrative functions are accurate, you'll demonstrate your attention to detail and organizational prowess.
Join Us in Making a Difference:
Beyond the standard duties of a veterinarian, you'll experience the fulfillment of providing sanctuary to these incredible creatures. As you work in challenging and diverse environments, your dedication will be rewarded with the knowledge that you've improved the lives of these deserving animals.
You'll be part of a close-knit community, embracing flexibility, compassion, and a shared mission. At Project Chimps, we value continuous learning and professional development, and we provide a comprehensive benefits package to support your well-being and growth.
Together, we can create a brighter future for primates and inspire a world where compassion and care define our relationship with all living beings. Join us on this transformative journey as a Veterinary Medical Director at Project Chimps.
