    AEI seeks a hardworking, creative, detail-oriented, and highly organized individual to work with a talented team of fundraising professionals and support the financial and analytical needs of the Development department.

     

    This role offers a great opportunity for anyone interested in expanding on or developing a passion for nonprofit fundraising and public policy. The ideal candidate must be able to collaborate on a team, possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and be able to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

     

    The employee in this role reports to the director of Development operations and works full-time and in person in AEI’s office in Washington, DC. AEI is open to hiring either a senior associate or a manager for Development grant operations, and this role’s title will be determined based on the candidate’s experience level. The anticipated start date for this position is as soon as possible.

     

    Responsibilities

    • Senior Associate
      • Be an active member of the fundraising team, working directly with Development staff, program managers, and research staff to manage projects’ financial components.
      • Serve as a bridge among program managers, research staff, the Development department, and the accounting team.
      • Facilitate communication, collaboration, and problem-solving across departments.
      • Create budgets and financial reports that support AEI’s innovative, collaborative fundraising approach and ensure adherence to the funder’s requirements.
      • Communicate with and advise research staff on expenditures related to funded programs.
      • Summarize grant terms and conditions for input into the grant master file system.
      • Monitor revenue recognition for budgeting, reporting, and closing in collaboration with others.
      • Track financial aspects of grants as research programs administer them.
    • Manager (Note: The manager role will encompass many of the senior associate’s responsibilities, as well as the following.)
      • Proactively lead the fundraising team, working directly with Development staff, program managers, and research staff to manage projects’ financial components.
      • Identify and address potential issues before they escalate, ensuring smooth operations and effective collaboration among departments.
      • Communicate financial information clearly and effectively to non-finance stakeholders.
      • Advise and strategize with research staff on expenditures related to funded programs.
      • Provide insight and recommendations to support strategic decision making.
      • Review proposed grant terms with stakeholders before the organization accepts them, raising any potential issues.
      • Prepare interim analyses and assure timely reporting to funders.

    Qualifications

    • Senior Associate: 1 years of full-time, relevant work experience
    • Manager: 3 years of full-time, relevant work experience
    • Experience working with budgets (required)
    • Knowledge of grants processes (preferred)
    • Interest in public policy and AEI’s mission and intellectual curiosity
    • A strong aptitude for customer-relationship management databases, such as Salesforce, and accounting software, such as Sage Intacct and SAP Concur (required)
    • High proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
    • The ability to work closely on a team while independently managing and prioritizing multiple assignments with tight deadlines and multiple stakeholders
    • Numerical adeptness and a commitment to data accuracy
    • A proactive and creative but grounded mindset, with the ability to solve problems and forecast in a dynamic environment
    • Exceptionally strong oral and written communication skills
    • A bachelor’s degree (required)
    • A master’s degree in nonprofit administration, public administration, or public policy (encouraged)

    Physical Requirements and Working Conditions at AEI

    • The employee is regularly expected to stand, sit, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, and keyboard. This job requires close-up vision for computer work.
    • The employee must be able to lift up to 30 pounds.
    • The employee must be able to work in a confined area.
    • Moderate noise (e.g., from computers, phones, printers, and light traffic) is expected.
