    Position description

The Department of Environmental Studies (https://envs.ucsc.edu) at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an Assistant (Tenure Track) or Associate Teaching Professor (Tenured) in Geographic Information Science (GIS). This position will entail three key roles intended to support a growing geospatial program in the Department of Environmental Studies: 1) lead a newly-approved GIS Masters' program; 2) teach undergraduate, graduate, and professional development courses in Geographic Information and Spatial Data Science; and 3) maintain Center for Integrated Spatial Research (CISR) facilities and support geospatial research in the department. We seek a scholar who will teach introductory and advanced academic courses at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional development level that will help students acquire, analyze, and visualize spatial data with a focus on techniques for solving complex geographic problems. The candidate should be qualified to teach some of the advanced courses in the curriculum which focus on geospatial software development, web mapping, enterprise spatial databases, 3D systems, drones and aerial technologies, field-based surveying systems, remote sensing, and geospatial server infrastructure and management. In addition, the candidate will develop and teach a variable number of non-academic, short-courses as part of the CISR professional development geospatial training program.

This position requires demonstrated excellence and pedagogical innovation in teaching introductory and advanced spatial mapping, analysis, and programming courses to a diverse student body. Prior experience administering an academic or non-academic training program and broad engagement with the professional environmental and geospatial community are considered highly desirable. The candidate should have a record of scholarly activity (commensurate with a teaching-focused position) in applying GIS to interdisciplinary environmental problem solving and/or in the learning sciences related to GIS and spatial analysis in environmental fields. We seek a candidate who can support teaching and research interests of the department in environmental policy and justice, conservation of natural resources, agroecology, climate change, and political ecology. We welcome candidates with experience in new approaches to participatory, decolonial, and reflexive mapping practices.

The candidate will have experience developing and maintaining complex geographic information solutions for a diverse array of end users. Preferred qualifications include: (1) experience in developing geospatial solutions including custom application development, automated geoprocessing workflows, server-based services in an ESRI environment, and use of Python, R, SQL, ArcGIS, and open-source GIS software to develop scalable geospatial solutions; (2) understanding of web-based application development and be able to validate experience with front end web programming languages; (3) expertise in the design and deployment of back end components including ArcGIS Enterprise, enterprise databases, geospatial web services, and Windows Server administration; and (4) experience fundraising to support GIS facilities and research.
