    POSITION OBJECTIVE

    Working with a high degree of independence and under general direction of the Director of Clinical Operations, the Assistant Director of Nursing will be responsible for managing medical care management, clinical compliance, and daily RN operations at Case Western Reserve University Health Services. The assistant director will also participate in clinical patient care and other duties as needed.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Provide direct nursing care to patients in all clinical settings including primary care, psychiatry, sexual and reproductive health, immunizations, campus outreach and occupational health. Assess patient needs, provide appropriate interventions, document all clinical activities promptly in the electronic health record, and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions. Initiate a plan of care as designated by physician or advanced practice provider. In partnership with psychiatry staff, manage psychiatric medication requests and conduct psychiatric medication check in visits as scheduled (25%)
    • Develop, oversee, and manage the processes for medical care management of students, including referral tracking, hospitalization follow-up, and escalation of care. Working with members of the Division of Student Affairs, the Director of Acute Mental Health Care, Crisis Response and Care Management, and other campus partners provide guidance and leadership for students transitioning back to campus/academics following a medical hospitalization of other disruptive medical issues. This position will attend regular CARE meetings (through the Division of Student Affairs) as well as weekly University Health and Counseling Services meetings to review students with additional medical and/or mental health needs.     • Provide supervision for immunization compliance programs on campus. Provide oversight to immunization compliance programs for students in clinical rotations, and any other campus immunization mandates. Duties include managing clinical compliance processes, meeting with campus partners, staying current with immunization recommendations (20%)
    • Manage daily RN schedules. Monitor and adjust daily Registered Nurse schedules as needed, manage vacation requests. Be available as a resource for other RNs during clinic hours. (20%)
    • Develop, maintain, evaluate and interpret operational, administrative and nursing policies, procedures and systems. Provide recommendations for clinical operational, administrative, and nursing procedures. (6%)


    NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Collaborate with peers and other members of the health care team on specialty rounds addressing students with such issues as eating disorders, attention disorders, and anxiety/depression management. Participate in peer review programs to ensure highest quality of nursing care and fidelity to best practice standards. (2%)
    • Perform other departmental duties, including participation in staff development activities, as needed. (2%)


    CONTACTS

    Department: Continuous contact with University Health and Counseling Service providers and staff regarding clinical operations.

    University: Regular contact with university colleagues to refer students to university resources such as Student Success, Residence Life, Academic Deans, Athletics, etc.

    External: Regular contact with external peers to manage student referrals to outside community health care providers such University Hospitals, Cleveland Clinic Foundation and Metro Health.

    Students: Frequent and direct contact with students in the clinical and care management settings.


    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

    Provide clinical and administrative supervision, including management of day-to-day nursing assignments for all nurses and allied health staff. Provide timely feedback on performance including completion of annual performance reviews with the Director of Clinical Operations.


    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education/Experience/Licensing: RN license in the State of Ohio. Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of clinical nursing experience or Associate’s degree and 9 years of experience required. Minimum of 2 years of experience managing and overseeing staff and processes in a clinical setting preferred. Master’s degree preferred.


    REQUIRED SKILLS

    • Possess clinical nursing experience in direct patient care.
    • Ability to provide age appropriate care for the population(s) served. Identify and respond effectively to the unique needs of each population.

    • Experience using an electronic health record to document all clinical encounters. Maintain accurate and complete records; document patient condition, active problems, treatments, medication and outcomes promptly.
    • Knowledge of safety policies and procedures of the university, and keep up with new trends in nursing safety and compliance with national standards for safe care.
    • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage projects and programs.
    • Active listening to facilitate patient care along with excellent communication skills.
    • Ability to work collegially and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team process.
    • Ability to provide support and training to other clinical staff.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Standard Health and Counseling offices in a university campus setting.

    Full-time professionals are exempt from overtime and are expected to work a minimum of 40 hours per week around the university’s core hours of operation. University Health and Counseling Services clinical work, outreach, and campus crisis/emergency response efforts may require UHCS staff to work evenings and weekends. This position is required to participate in an on-call schedule.

    Staff may be required to adjust their clinical and administrative assignments, as needed, depending on departmental, divisional, and university needs. This may involve flexing to cover other clinical roles due to staff absence, changes in the model of care, or other reasons determined by the Assistant VP of UHCS.

    Staff are expected to provide services on-site and in-person, with the understanding that there may be aspects of their role and responsibilities that could shift to virtual and/or via hybrid modalities, depending on university requirement, departmental need, public health guidance and/or at the discretion of the Executive Director of UHCS.

    The employee will be exposed to bloodborne pathogens. Personal protective equipment (gloves and lab coat) will be provided. May be required to perform “on-call” coverage for students to advise on health concerns as an additional project.
