Automotive Mechanic performs maintenance and repairs on automobiles and light trucks. Performs major repairs like body work, chassis and engine repair, and disassembling and assembling components. Being an Automotive Mechanic also performs minor repairs and maintenance work such as replacing worn drive belts, hoses, and filters. Helps diagnose issues, uses electronic indicator systems to identify problems, and performs routine safety checks on brakes, suspension, exhaust, cooling, and other systems. Additionally, Automotive Mechanic adheres to appropriate safety procedures. Typically requires a high school diploma. Typically requires a Certificate in Automotive Technology. Typically reports to a supervisor. The Automotive Mechanic works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline.   • Under general supervision, performs preventive maintenance services and safety inspections of all city diesel, gasoline, hybrid automotive vehicles and equipment. Performs minor repairs, component installations and removals on a wide variety of vehicles and equipment; performs a variety of other tasks relative to the assigned area of responsibility.Performs routine preventive maintenance services and safety inspections on all City vehicles and equipment.

    Drains and dispenses fuel, oil, water coolant and other vehicle fluids as required.

    Inflates, inspects, repairs, and changes automotive and equipment tires; this includes balancing tires.

    Replaces and repairs lubricant fittings, clamps, belts, light bulbs, fuses and other electrical components.

    Inspects, maintains and replaces automotive vehicles gasoline and diesel powered equipment batteries.

    Cleans, washes, waxes and details vehicles.

    Drives commercial class vehicles during delivery, pick-up and road test.

    Performs emergency road calls of disabled vehicles, diagnose operational problems and perform necessary repairs.

    Uses equipment such as tire changes, balancing machines, hoists, high pressure washer, electric diagnostic equipment for initial inspection and, electronic battery analyzer, forklift and other equipment associated with the maintenance and repair of City vehicles and equipment.

    Adjusts and replaces minor body parts and accessories such as door latches, mirrors and lenses.

    Performs minor mechanical repairs on vehicles and equipment which are easily accessible including but not limited to repairing small engines, exhaust systems, lighting systems, batteries, tires, servicing transmission and differentials.

    Assists Automotive Mechanic II in performing more complicated repairs and maintenance on vehicles and equipment.

    Assists Automotive Parts Clerk in the receiving and pick-up of parts and supplies.

    Maintains the shop in clean and orderly fashion including clean-up of fluid spills.

    Maintains routine shop records; such as detailed job repair and part orders.

    Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of the job.Valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL-B) with air brakes endorsement or equivalent upon application or ability to obtain within sixty (60) days from hire date.

    Requires knowledge, skills and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of high school or GED with additional courses in the servicing and maintenance of vehicles and equipment preferred.

    Requires possession of all mechanics tools normally used in the servicing, repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

    Knowledge of automotive equipment including general maintenance and lubrication.

    Knowledge of modern tools and machines used in testing and repairing motor vehicles.

    Knowledge of internal combustion engines.

    Requires servicing, maintenance and repairs at a production rate equal to or greater than Division or industry standards.

    Ability to read and understand automotive service manuals.

    Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form.

    Ability to operate a computer, tablet, and related electronic devices with appropriate training.

    Ability to maintain effective working relationships with employees, contractors, vendors, and the general public.

    Ability to work various shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as assigned. Must also be available to respond to emergency situations 24 hours a day if necessary.

    Ability to work independently with limited supervision.

    Requires knowledge of the geographical area in the City of Rock Island.

    Assists in the general maintenance and housekeeping of City owned property and buildings.

    Requires ability to operate vehicles skillfully and safely; observes safe driving practices.

    Requires ability to work in a variety of weather conditions.

    Comply with established safety standards and rules including the use of safety equipment, personal protective equipment and other devices and procedures necessary for protection.Selected candidates must meet a residency requirement, which includes living in the state of Illinois and must report within 60 minutes after being called into work for an overtime assignment. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock; and occasionally exposed to wet, humid and varied weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Environmental Conditions: The work is performed inside and/or outside and includes being exposed to extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, mechanical hazards, electrical hazards, chemical hazards, atmospheric conditions that affect the respiratory system or skin and oils, darkness or poor lighting conditions, trenches, and/or isolation.
