    BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This position is housed within the Fisheries Section and works out of the Jonesboro headquarters, serving Fisheries Management Region C - the Grand Lake Region. This is professional services and scientific work at the biologist level, involving management of the State’s inland fisheries by protecting, preserving, and enhancing Maine’s natural resources. This position works in a three-person team and reports to the IF&W Resource Supervisor in carrying out departmental goals and objectives. 

    The position responsibilities include the following tasks:

    • Conducts scientific studies by surveying fish populations, performing analysis, and assessing impacts that inform decision making.
    • Establishes and maintains effective partnerships with agencies internal and external to state government.
    • Performs research, investigation, analysis, and monitoring of fish species and their habitats to support planning and management.
    • Interacts and confers with other biologists, professionals, and advocacy groups.
    • Leads and coordinates the work of contract and temporary non-state employees and volunteers.
    • Assists senior level resource biologists in planning and coordinating fisheries assessment activities.
    • Writes environmental assessments to meet state and federal compliance and permitting requirements.
    • Interprets, explains, and promotes programs, policies, and concerns to the public, other agencies, private organizations, and the media. 
    • Implementing regional and statewide work programs to protect, enhance, and restore inland fisheries resources.

    Work is performed under limited supervision, outside in all weather conditions, and periodically during nights and weekends.

    1. Summarize your education in fisheries management, biology, and ecology, and how it relates to this position.
    2. Summarize your experience in freshwater fisheries management as related to: (a) Inventorying, surveying, and monitoring inland fisheries resources; (b) Promulgation and evaluation of fishing regulations; (c) Habitat restoration, improvement, and protection; and (d) Providing agency comments on Environmental Reviews for state/federal agencies.             
    3. Summarize your experience communicating both orally and in writing with lay and technical audiences.
    4. Summarize your experience working with fisheries related data, including acknowledgement of the database and analysis software programs with which you have direct experience.
    5. Discuss your experience and role in creating and/or maintaining relationships with State/Federal/Tribal governments/agencies, outside partners, and public interest groups on fisheries related issues.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Fisheries or Wildlife Management, or related field -AND- two (2) years of progressively responsible related laboratory or field research and/or management experience. Equivalent experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.

    Preference will be given to candidates who successfuly demonstrate:

    • Strong interpersonal skills and leadership qualities, including experience communicating orally and in writing to both technical and non-technical audiences.
    • Strong commitment to work respecfully and collaboratively as part of a team dedicated to responsible management of Maine's inland fisheries.
    • Experience sampling fish populations through a variety of methods.
    • Experience working with members of the public on freshwater fisheries issues.
