A bachelor's (or higher) degree in Biology, Marine Science, Fisheries Science, Ecology, Conservation Biology; and three years of experience with marine fisheries management demonstrating progressively increased levels of responsibility. A Master’s can be substituted for one year of experience.
Under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner for Natural Resources, assist the Division of Marine Resources in advancing Division priorities and special projects.
Incumbent shall:
Coordinate and assist Division leadership to manage and maintain the states marine fisheries and protect their habitats through development of recommendations for management actions such as regulating harvest, impact assessment as well as restoration of habitats related to marine fisheries and habitats that sustain them. Management includes but is not limited to regulating harvest, managing and restoring habitats and promoting public awareness of benefits of diverse marine fisheries and habitats. This position also assures appropriate coordination with external partners and within the agency and Division. The position may represent the Department and Division on various work groups and technical committees and will help in coordinating all necessary legislative reviews, guidance and policy documents that might be associated or developed associated with special programmatic issues.
Through coordination with DEC Leadership and other appropriate Division staff, set priorities, delegate work and assure staff are accountable for completing assignments as per work plan goals.
Specific activities will include:
1. coordinating and convening the Saltwater License stakeholder group to build a plan for a successful saltwater license and obtain statewide stakeholder support
2. serving as the Commissioner’s proxy on the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission to represent state priorities with respect to fisheries quotas
3. May also attend Mid-Atlantic Fisheries Management Council meetings for the same purpose
4. Will provide quotas guidance as needed to the Division
5. Assist management with overseeing facilitation of construction and building systems set up.
Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
