Tests for structural soundness and inspects fittings, feed pumps, safety and check valves, water and pressure gauges, and controls to ensure boilers operate safely and efficiently. Being a Boilermaker reads and uses blueprints to determine locations, positions, or dimensions of parts. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Additionally, Boilermaker typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Boilermaker works under moderate supervision. Gaining or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline.     The Washington State Ferry (WSF) system is an essential part of Washington's transportation network with more than 1,800 employees working together to safely and efficiently carry nearly 24 million passengers a year! There are over 400 sailings each day on 9 ferry routes across Puget Sound and through the San Juan Islands, including an international route to Sidney, British Columbia.
     
    The Opportunity
    WSDOT is currently seeking a Boilermaker/Welder Journeyperson to perform skilled welding, burning, rigging, and ship fitting work in accordance with Federal State and US Coast Guard regulations. This position also performs all work in accordance with blueprints, plans, and knowledge of various codes, welding processes, and metallurgy.  

     What to Expect
    Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you/the Boilermaker/Welder Journeyperson will:
    • Repair terminals and vessels to meet federal and local requirements
    • Fabricate or repair new steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and copper-nickel parts and equipment 
    • Layout, fit up, and weld fabricated, cast, and forged components of the ship and terminal’s structure and assemblies
    • Perform non-destructive testing, operational tests, and documents results in accordance with Coast Guard, American Bureau of Shipping, and American Welding Society codes
     
    Qualifications
    To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
    • Journey Level Status as a Boilermaker/Welder. 
    OR
    • Completion of a Boilermaker or Welder apprenticeship.
    AND
    • WABO certification w/ 1/8” 7018 rod in all positions within 2 years of hire.
    • Valid Washington State Driver’s License.
    • Ability to obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) within 90 days of hire.
    It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
    • Two (2) years of ship fitting experience.
     
    Important Notes 
    • This position is subject to the completion of a respiratory questionnaire as required by the regulatory authority, and an annual fit test, to obtain a skin-to-rubber seal. 
    • Requires pre-employment drug screening and random pool drug and alcohol screening.
