Building and Grounds Supervisor supervises and trains building and grounds maintenance staff. Oversees landscaping activities, the maintenance of sidewalks and parking areas, and the removal of trash and snow. Being a Building and Grounds Supervisor maintains and monitors the operation of all utility systems such as heating, ventilating and air conditioning. May be responsible for the housekeeping staff. Additionally, Building and Grounds Supervisor, a level I supervisor is considered a working supervisor with little authority for personnel actions. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. Working team member that may validate or coordinate the work of others on a support team. Suggests improvements to process, is a knowledge resource for other team members. Has no authority for staff actions. Generally has a minimum of 2 years experience as an individual contributor.       SUMMARY: The Custodian is responsible for safety, security, and cleanliness of the building(s) and grounds, maintaining the school physical plant in a condition of operating excellence for full educational use at all times.

      QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

      EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)

      LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence

      MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.

      REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral diagram, or schedule form.

      OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to pass a district written and physical test. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. Must be computer literate.

      While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms such as to operate vibrating machinery. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climb on to ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.

      The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee will sometime push/pull items such as tables, scaffolds, and cabinets. Specific vision abilities required by the job includes close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

      WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

      While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays and non-household dust. The employee must be able to meet deadlines. Frequently the employee will work alone and must be a self starter.

      ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

      1. Maintain excellent personal hygiene.

      2. Possesses and maintains an excellent attendance record.

      3. Works with standard custodial chemicals and finishes for cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfection.

      4. Dust mops floors and dust rooms which may require the use of a ladder which is over 20 lbs.

      5. Cleans urinals, stools, and fixtures. Uses a plunger to unplug toilets, sinks, and drinking fountains.

      6. Washes windows and doors; use of a ladder weighing over 20 lbs.

      7. Replenishes and cleans soap and paper dispensers.

      8. Washes chalkboards, desks, chairs, walls, tables, and other room surfaces and furnishings. May require lifting of desks, chairs, tables, and other room surfaces and furnishings; would be moving or lifting over 20 lbs.

      9. Cleans and washes lockers.

      10. Vacuums areas as needed with various vacuum cleaners, including a backpack vacuum; may be over 20 lbs. lifting and pulling.

      11. Performs all other light housekeeping chores.

      12. Locks and unlocks doors. Makes sure building is secure.

      13. Maintains floors including floor finishing and floor machine operation. Requires use of mop bucket and wringer; lifting, pushing, and swinging mop all over 20 lbs.

      14. Removes trash and relines receptacles. Removal of trash over 20 lbs.

      15. Cleans snow from landing and walkways more than 20 lbs.

      16. Changes light bulbs. Use of ladder and overhead work; over 20 lbs.

      17. Moves furniture and other classroom equipment weighing more than 20 lbs.

      18. Continually checks, corrects, or reports dangerous equipment conditions and potentially hazardous situations.

      Effectively communicates all operational needs. Submit work orders as needed.

      19. Climbs ladders and works from scaffolding; use of ladder weighing over 20 lbs.

      20. Assists in summer building clean up; over 20 lbs.

      21. Complete painting projects as assigned.

      22. Setting up before and taking down and clean up after events. This requires lifting, pulling and pushing over 20 lbs. Climbing of bleachers and steps.

      23. Other duties and tasks as assigned.
