BUILDING INSPECTOR inspects initial construction and additional repairs to ensure adherence to contract specifications, building ordinances, and zoning laws. Building Inspector

  • This position performs building inspections to enforce all applicable codes and ordinances.

    The hiring range for this position, depending upon qualifications, is as follows:

    • $57,844 - $70,000 for applicants with a Combination Residential Inspector Certification and Combination Commercial Inspector Certification. 
    • $53,439 - $60,000 for applicants with a Combination Residential Inspector Certification.
    • $49,369 - $52,000 for non-certified Building Inspectors.
    Through the career development plan, non-certified Building Inspectors must achieve one of the four certifications (structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing) within 18 months of hire, and the remaining certifications within 36 months of hire.  Each of the four certifications will receive a 2% salary increase. 
    • Performs building, electrical, mechanical, gas, plumbing, and fire systems inspections on commercial and residential sites to ensure compliance with the Uniform Statewide Building Code.
    • Issues stop work orders as appropriate; conducts re-inspections to determine compliance.
    • Maintains the building inspection database with comments noted on inspections.
    • Works with citizens and contractors to resolve issues in cost efficient ways while still meeting all USBC requirements.
    • Effectively communicate with the Building Official to keep that person informed of current issues on a timely basis.
    • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other county employees, general and subcontractors, real estate personnel, business leaders, property owners, developers, surveyors, architects, engineers, and the general public.
    • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and negotiate, defend, or settle matters.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
    • At least 3 years of experience and general knowledge in at least one of the following areas: building construction; building constructions conceptual and administrative processes; building, fire or housing inspections; plumbing, electrical or mechanical trades; or fire protection, elevator or property maintenance work.  Any combination of education and experience that would confer equivalent knowledge and ability shall be deemed to satisfy this requirement.
    • Certifications associated with this position or ability to obtain one required certification within 18 months of hire.  When two or more certifications are required, the remaining certifications shall be obtained within 3 years of hire.
    • The work consists of varied building inspection duties. Strict regulations, combined with the unique nature of each case in question, contribute to the complexity of the work.
    • The purpose of this position is to inspect construction activity in the county. Successful performance ensures compliance with all relevant building codes and ordinances.
    • Knowledge of the principles and practices of commercial, industrial, and residential construction.
    • Knowledge of the techniques, methods and trends related to building inspection and codes administration.
    • Knowledge of federal, state and local building codes and safety requirements.
    • Knowledge of structural, electrical, gas, mechanical, plumbing, and fire prevention codes for building construction.
    • Knowledge of county planning and zoning ordinances.
    • Knowledge to obtain certification in several areas including structural, electrical, mechanical, gas, plumbing, fire code and amusement device inspections.
    • Knowledge of construction industry standards.
    • Skill in performing mathematical calculations.
    • Skill in reviewing site plans and subdivision plats.
    • Skill in the use of a computer. 
    • Skill in using such inspection, test, and measurement equipment as amp meters, circuit testers, and rulers.
    • Skill in maintaining files and records.
    • Skill in oral and written communication.
    • Must possess the ability to move around construction sites, climb, stoop and crawl in order to visually examine materials and structures.
    • Must be willing to work outside in all types of weather and situations.
