Building Inspector, Sr. inspects initial construction and additional repairs to ensure adherence to contract specifications, building ordinances, and zoning laws. May be assigned to residential or commercial structures. Being a Building Inspector, Sr. may require an advanced degree. Typically reports to supervisor or manager. The Building Inspector, Sr. gains exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function. Occasionally directed in several aspects of the work.   • CLASS SUMMARY
    This is the sixth of six levels in the Building Inspection series. Incumbents coordinate the day-to-day operations of the code enforcement and building inspection departments. Responsibilities may include monitoring day-to-day operations and resolving issues that arise; scheduling services and operational activities; compiling, summarizing, and reporting on operational data; providing information for the development of a budget; monitoring expenses; and managing supervisors and line staff.

    TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)
    1. Supervises staff to include: prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff are trained; ensuring that employees follow policies and procedures; maintaining a healthy and safe working environment; and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.
    2. Manages the activities of the building inspection and code enforcement departments, which includes developing and implementing departmental policies and procedures; and identifying and implementing opportunities to improve services. Ensures compliance with Federal, state, and local laws, regulations, codes, and/or standards.
    3. Assists staff, contractors, architects, engineers, and the general public by providing technical information on inspections, codes, plans, policies, and procedures.
    4. Coordinates departmental activities and priorities with other City departments  and external agencies.
    5. Prepares cost estimates for budget recommendations, submits justifications for budget items, monitors and controls program expenditures.
    6. Conducts field inspections on complex or unusual projects.
    7. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
       
    TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):
    Bachelor's degree in business or a related field, and four years construction, inspections, or code enforcement experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

    • Maintaining logs and records;
    • Monitoring a budget;
    • Using a computer and related software applications;
    • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with subordinates, coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction.
    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
    Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

    Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.

    Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions, intense noises and travel.
