  • The JR286 Director of Business Development will be responsible for driving profitable growth by sourcing, evaluating and managing the deal flow of new business opportunities.  Working in alignment with our Strategic Plan, this role will be responsible for creating an environment where the best growth ideas and opportunities are identified, prioritized and strategically pursued.  As part of this process, the Director of Business Development will lead our efforts to identify and evaluate new business opportunities, while maintaining a disciplined approach to prioritizing the opportunities we pursue. 

    This role reports to the SVP Business Development and will be responsible for developing and executing strategies for expanding JR286’s existing portfolio of brands through new business opportunities, including new licenses, new joint ventures, strategic partnerships, acquisitions and expansions within existing partnerships. 

    The ideal candidate will have experience in evaluating and executing mergers and acquisitions in the consumer space, particularly in the sports and leisure and outdoor equipment and accessories sector.  The candidate will need to bring strong experience in financial modeling and use of valuation models, and have a background in understanding the value drivers in the sports accessories space.  He/she will have to possess an inquisitive personality, be highly motivated, display initiative and discipline, show an ability to manage projects independently and perform at a high level under deadlines and time sensitive situations. 

    What You’ll Do

    • Strategic Planning
      • Learn and understand JR286’s Strategic Plan.
      • Assess JR286’s current business (SWOT analysis) to determine areas for investment to optimize profitable growth.
      • Develop a Business Case methodology – establish a methodology to identify, track, screen and evaluate new business opportunities and initiatives (e.g., scorecard/benchmarking, assessing project prioritization and evaluating execution risk).
      • Create and deliver impactful presentations and memos for various internal and external stakeholders.
    • Market Research and Analysis
      • Conduct research to assess market and industry sectors to help identify growth opportunities in new business lines, brands, product categories and channels of distribution.
      • Financial modelling of markets, industries and new business opportunities.
      • Revenue and gross margin analysis (e.g., product mix and its effect on margin rates, product costs and royalties).
      • Develop analytical models to evaluate key KPIs to track for new business opportunities. 
    • Sourcing Opportunities
      • Explore expansion opportunities with existing partners (in coordination with existing business owners), potential new licensing opportunities and/or acquisition targets.
      • Network with appropriate targets, intermediaries, and referral sources to generate robust deal flow opportunities.
      • Manage, track and report “Deal Flow” status through organized process. 
    • Deal Execution
      • Quarterback process for target due diligence, working closely with various advisors in the transaction process, as needed.
      • Work cross-functionally alongside Product, Marketing, Sales, Finance, Legal and Operations.
      • Participate in negotiations of deal terms, along with Legal and business leads.
      • Coordinate diligence and various data and workflow streams and deal documentation.
      • Assist in on-boarding relationships with new strategic partners. 

    Ideal Background, Experience and Skillset of Candidate 

    • Minimum of five years of experience in consumer sector M&A experience in either investment banking or private equity
    • MBA from top university (preferred but not mandatory), with prior work experience in investment banking or consulting
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Strong understanding of consumer (preferably sport and outdoor products) markets
    • Deep knowledge of financial modeling and analysis
    • Highly organized with strong attention to detail
    • Ability to see the big picture, help formulate strategy and understand value drivers
    • Strong interpersonal skills
    • Team player
