Summary:
The Controller works closely with the CFO to oversee the Bank’s and Bank Holding company’s (“the Company”) accounting activities. This position ensures accurate internal and external recording and reporting of financial transactions. In addition, the Controller oversees effective project and change management; establishes and maintains the Company’s overall accounting systems, internal controls, procedures, and policies; assists in coordinating external audits; assists with the preparation of required regulatory reports; and presents analyses and recommendations to senior management related to strategic financial issues/decisions.
Job Responsibilities:
- Oversees the activities of the Finance Department staff.
- Manages the month-end closing process and preparation of account reconciliations.
- Responsible for cost accounting management and reporting.
- Assists the CFO in the overall analysis of general accounting functions, monthly and annual financial statements, including variance and cost/profitability analysis.
- Works closely with the CFO to plan, develop and implement adequate accounting controls, policies, and procedures. Assists in monitoring new accounting pronouncements and works to assess the impact and implement the proper accounting when applicable.
- Calculates or reviews calculations of significant estimates and complex transactions, including, but not limited to, allowance for loan losses, loan sales gains, deferred fees and costs, lease liability, benefit plan liabilities, etc.
- Reviews income and expense entries for appropriateness and ensures all monthly entries have been made, accrued, or prepaid timely.
- Assists in managing the bank’s capital, liquidity, and interest rate risk components of the CAMELS rating system.
- Prepare or review other periodic financial statements, reports and analysis (e.g., ALCO, Board meeting financials, Bank Profitability, Interest Rate Risk Reports, CALL Report).
- Manages tax calculations and estimated tax payments.
- Assists with gathering information for audits and examinations by Regulators and Auditors as needed.
- Assist CFO in preparing the annual audited financial statements and footnotes.
- Assist CFO with the preparation of budgets and periodic analysis of budget variance.
- Performs other accounting and finance duties as assigned by CFO.
- Must complete all required training, including Bank Secrecy Act/Anti-Money Laundering training, suitable to their position within the bank.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or equivalent experience.
- MBA or MS in Accounting a plus.
- Minimum 5 years relevant experience with increasing responsibility.
- Banking experience is a must, with knowledge of banking procedures, policies, and regulations governing financial institutions.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including strong Microsoft Excel skills.
- Strong knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
- Strong interpersonal skills along with solid verbal and written communication ability.
- Highly organized with the ability to problem solve.
- Ability to anticipate and identify complex financial issues.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment where unexpected changes occur.
- Detail oriented with the ability to see the big picture.
Physical Requirements:
Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
