  • Responsible for the protection of life and property, maintaining and restoring public order, prevention of crimes, apprehension of criminals, and enforcement of laws and ordinances in accordance with rules and regulations.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 
    • Respond to police calls and emergencies as directed.  Operate vehicles properly both emergency and tactical conditions.
    • Deters and detects unlawful activities by effective police work.  This would include patrolling assigned areas, checking for suspicious activities, actively seeking wanted persons or property.
    • Monitor and control hazardous roadway conditions and perform immediate action to remedy hazardous conditions; enforce traffic laws or other ordinances; and assist stranded motorists.
    • Respond to traffic accidents and triage scenes.  Provide rescue help and emergency first aid treatment as necessary and provide support to other agencies as directed.
    • Conduct initial review of investigations including taking statements a gathering information or physical evidence as required.  Serve warrants and subpoenas as directed.
    • Respond and react to various complaints and calls for assistance as appropriated or directed.
    • Investigates and prepares reports on traffic accidents as directed. Gathers evidence from drivers and witnesses, prepares diagrams of the scene and reports for police record.
    • Interact with victims, witnesses, survivors, and outside agencies in order to maintain effective community relations.  Communicate appropriate information to help make the public aware of special areas of concern.
    • Monitor and report on vehicle condition and appearance.  Request necessary repairs.  Restock vehicle with supplies when appropriate.
    • Maintains effective community relations, which would include answering questions, provide directions and prompt assistance as needed, and participates in public relations activities as directed.  Handled all other crime prevention duties as assigned.
    • Performs such other duties as are consistent with the tasks of the position and as may be assigned by the Chief of Police, their designee, or the City.
    • Keep superior officers advised of developments and perform other duties as assigned.
    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
    Education
    • Minimum Associates degree in law enforcement, criminal justice or a related field.
     
    Licenses and Certifications
    • License as a peace officer by the Minnesota Board of Peace Officers' Standard and Training (P.O.S.T.)
    • Candidates must be post licensed by the time of appointment.
    • Must possess a valid Minnesota driver's license.
     
    Other
    • Must successfully complete a physical examination, psychological examination, drug and alcohol screening and background investigation.  No felony convictions.
     
    Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Knowledge of State Statutes and local ordinances
    • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
    • Knowledge and experience in computer operations, including work processing.
    • Ability to cope with situations professionally, courteously and tactfully and with respect for the rights of the citizen.
    • Ability to acquire skills in the use and care of firearms.
     
     
     
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
    Education
    • Bachelor degree in law enforcement, criminal justice or related field.
    • Knowledge of modern police service delivery and investigation methods and procedures.  Knowledge of recent developments, current literature and sources of information regarding modern police methods, techniques and records.
     
     
     SUPERVISION RECEIVED
    Works under the general supervision of the Patrol Sergeant, Captains or Chief of Police.

    Typewriter, personal computer, including word processing and spreadsheet software; calculator; telephone; copy machine; fax machine; scanner.
     
    Squad car, police radio and MDC and firearms and duty equipment.

    PRE-EMPLOYMENT PROCESS
    The City of Faribault conducts a thorough pre-employment process for incumbents joining the organization.  This process may include professional reference checks, employment verification, assessment testing, criminal history check, and driver's check (must have valid Driver's License and excellent driving record).  All final candidates must successfully complete and pass the City's evaluation of all pre-employment results before their first day of employment.

     WAGES
    Entry level employees shall be placed between steps 1 ($33.24) and 3 ($35.16)  based on experience and education. Lateral Officers may be placed up to Step 9 ($41.11). Step increases are based on meeting the requirements of the position and are evaluated and given per contract guidelines.
