Job Summary:
Conducts thorough investigations related to suspected violations of federal, state, or local laws preventing and solving crime. Responsible for conducting thorough, timely, and expedited violence risk assessments for UMMC and rendering input on violence risk to the Command Staff of the Police Department. Conducts in-service training programs as required.
Education & Experience
High School diploma/GED and five years progressive law enforcement experience with prior investigative experience to include conducting law enforcement interviews. Graduate from a basic law enforcement training course or equivalent federal FLETC training, and a current or former police officer/law enforcement officer/agent in good standing with arrest authority in the prevention, detection, apprehension, detention, and/or investigation of felony and/or misdemeanor violations of federal, state, local, tribal, or military criminal laws or individuals serving as direct law enforcement.
Associate Degree in Criminal Justice or similar area preferred. Complete CPR and AED training within the first year. Within the first eighteen months of initial hire, and each year after that, complete no less than twenty-five hours of in-service training.
Mississippi Board of Law Enforcement Standards and Training Certificate on file with UMMC Police Department within one year of hire date. Valid Mississippi Driver's license within 90 days of hire date. ICS 100,200, 700, 800 within 90 days.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES OR REGISTRATION:
Complete CPR and AED training within the first year. Within the first eighteen months of initial hire, and each year after that, complete no less than twenty-five hours of in-service training.

Responsibilities

Conducts the initial and follow-up investigations of criminal incidents. Interviews persons connected with criminal incidents, including victims, witnesses, and suspects; secures crime scenes, collects, establishes a chain of custody, and preserves physical evidence; processes evidence through on-site identification technology and use of state and local laboratories.

Prepares and reviews written reports of investigative activities, arrests offenders; testifies in court regarding investigative activities.

Establishes influential contacts with the public, informants, co-workers, district attorney staff, and other law enforcement departments to gain information related to criminal activities; conducts surveillance and develops leads.

Conducts surveillance, establishes communication, and cooperates cooperation with other law enforcement agencies to investigate, locate, apprehend, and arrest offenders.

Responsible for conducting thorough, timely, and expedited violence risk assessments for UMMC and rendering input on violence risk to the executive team of the Police Department. Assists in determining the existence of threats of violence toward UMMC community members, whether on or off-campus, and supports the coordination of university-wide threat management responses. Serve as Subject Matter Expert (SME) on the topic of campus threat assessment/management.

Coordinates with medical examiners in death investigations and attends autopsies as required.

Prepares and executes arrest and search warrants.

Participates in special operations, programs, and other activities requested by other police department units and teams. Prepares media releases for review through the chain of command. Performs as a police officer as required.
