    Lifeguard & Swim Lesson Instructor Position Description:

    Swim Lessons: Teach swimming lessons to youth ages 3 - 12 years of age by following the American Red Cross “Learn to Swim” program that includes ARC levels Pre-K 1 - 3 (2.5 - 5 years) and Learn to Swim levels 1 – 6 (5 - 16 years). Class sizes will vary from 3 to 12 students per instructor. Class length is 30-minutes with 15-minutes between classes. Instructors are required to teach from “in the water” for all Pre-K classes and Learn to Swim levels 1 - 2. Instructors may teach from the pool deck for Learn to Swim levels 3-6. Some lifeguarding responsibilities during class are also required.

    Lifeguard: A USD lifeguard monitors pool activities and ensures patron safety to prevent and respond to safety concerns and emergencies. Lifeguards need to possess knowledge of rescue procedures and emergency medical procedures. To help prevent incidents, lifeguards must enforce all safety guidelines as outlined by USD. Lifeguards must remain alert throughout an entire shift to maintain safety. Additional job duties a lifeguard performs include preparing activity and incident reports and performing pool maintenance.

    Responsibilities

    Primary Lifeguard responsibilities include; Supervise pool deck area and lifeguard 25 yard x 40 yard college swimming pool; Monitor safety of pool area and patrons; Enforce pool usage and facility policies during open swim and during reserved usage time; Manage/Supervise large group events in the pool area; and secure facility during non-usage time. Secondary guard responsibilities include; open/close pool and pool deck as needed; and clean pool deck area and guarding/class equipment/supplies. Other duties as assigned.

    Primary Swim Instructor responsibilities include; Provide swim lessons (private or group) to youth of all levels and abilities based on American Red Cross (ARC) standards and program requirements in ARC Learn to Swim; Monitor safety of all members in the swim class and os patrons swimming near the lesson zone; Provide feedback to both the child participant as well as to the parent/guardian before and/or after each class; Instruct and evaluate swim lesson skills per participant; and Submit completed report cards at the end of each 2-week session.

    Other General: Responsibilities include; Attend mandatory staff training and meetings; work hours as scheduled which includes beginning and ending on time, answering parent/patron questions and cleaning up area within allotted time in schedule; and present professional appearance and attitude at all times. Other duties as assigned.

    Instructor/Lifeguard Required Qualifications:

    • Current Lifeguard certification required (from an accredited institution such as the American Red Cross).
    • Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED for the professional rescuer.
    • Must be able to lift at least 25 lbs without assistance.
    • Proactive as well as reactive lifeguarding skills.
    • Knowledge of emergency procedures for swimming pools.
    • Ability to communicate, instruct, and supervise children in the lesson program and all patrons in the surrounding pool area.
    • Ability to make prudent decisions, work effectively with fellow staff members and evaluate as well as correct safety issues that may affect the health/safety of the patrons.
    • Friendly, outgoing, team player, caring, responsible, reliable and able to work without direct supervision.
    • Ability to commit to the entire duration of the summer schedule (6/16/24 – 8/13/24)

    Instructor/Guard Preferred Qualifications:

    • Current WSI certification or the equivalent of at least 1-year experience teaching swim lessons to youth.

    Other Work Conditions:

    • All guard shifts and swim lessons are in our outdoor pool - all employees will be working in direct sun for the most of their shift and be exposed to other non-predictable weather elements (e.g. rain, wind, etc.).
    • All employees will be exposed to moderate to loud noise conditions.
    • All employees must complete a “minor safety” training orientation video (paid orientation time) before 6/16/24. If the training is not completed, the employment contract will be voided immediately.

    Schedule:

    • This is a 30-40 hour per week position, seasonal, non-benefit based.
    • Typical hours are between Mon-Thurs 9:45am-7:15pm plus one weekend shift (Fri-Sat-Sun) between 10am-6pm.
    • Hours depend on the success of the program and class scheduling. We will cancel classes with low enrollment, thereby, canceling or shortening shifts.
    • All shifts will require both guarding and teaching.
    • Due to the shortened period of the summer program, we will not grant any time off Monday – Thursday for the entire duration of the program. All applicants must be available to work at least Mon-Thurs for the listed dates of the 8-week program. We can approve time off on varied weekends (Fri-Sun) as long as we have enough staff to safely manage the pool area.
