Assistant Director, Career Development Center

  • The Alfred University Career Development Center empowers students and alums to find their purpose and meaningful work through informed decision-making, practical experience, and connection to the global community. Reporting to the Career Development Center director, the assistant director offers individual career counseling, internship, and job-search advice to students and alums, administers and coordinates programs, develops and presents workshops, and maintains positive relationships with students, faculty, staff, and alums.
     
    Salary/Rate:$46,000-$50,000 Annually, 35 hours per week

    Essential Functions Career Advising
    • Serve as the primary career adviser for all currently enrolled students and alums, offering resume writing, interviewing, job search and salary negotiation, LinkedIn and Handshake profile, and portfolio review and assistance.
    • Assist students in clarifying academic and career goals through individual and group career advising.
    • Help students develop awareness of the NACE career readiness competencies.
    • Administer and interpret career inventories (e.g., MBTI).
    • Participate in designing and delivering career-related workshops, programs, and panels.

    Internship and Experiential Learning

    • Coordinate all Applied and Experiential Learning (APEX) program aspects, including student application, approvals, and program evaluation.
    • Monitor the internship process and maintain the school/college requirements database for internship-for- credit.
    • In partnership with the director and the employer relations coordinator, work with faculty and university leadership to develop and administer credit-earning co-op programs.
    • In coordination with the employer relations coordinator, assist employers in developing internship programs and opportunities.

    Leadership

    • Hire, train, and supervise the activities of the Career Peer Mentor student staff members concerning knowledge of resources, office policy and procedures, student advising, and assigned projects.
    • Develop and implement programs designed to increase student career readiness.
    • Represent the university and career services at specified regional professional association conferences and professional development workshops.
    • Serve on various university committees and advisory boards as assigned.

    Other Duties & Responsibilities

    • Support students in using the career resource library and finding information on the web.
    • Maintain the career resource library, including maintaining a current bibliography and reviewing possible new additions of books, periodicals, newsletters, etc.
    • Attend evening and weekend university/division/department events as required.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the director to ensure the success of the Career Development Center.
    • Support and assist in creating intersections for faculty, staff, and students that will assist in transforming people’s lives.
    • Support and assist in creating an evolving culture of mentoring and rich engagement opportunities for faculty, staff, and students.
    • Maintain a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and a high degree of cultural competence and respect for a wide range of identities and experiences, therefore welcoming and supporting all faculty, staff, and students and expanding access to the AU experience.
    • Maintain a safe working environment within and around their facilities and associated equipment and supplies, including, but not limited to, obtaining Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information pertaining to any hazards associated with their work environment.
    • Participate in all required assigned training, including safety training, and will comply with safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
    • Effective written and oral communication skills.
    • Contributes to the University's overall success by performing other duties as assigned.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
    Qualifications – Education & Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Formal Education:
      • ​​​​​​​Master's degree required. Master's degree in higher education, human resources, or counseling- related field preferred.
    • Experience:
      • Minimum of two years of experience in career development and job-search counseling.
    • Additional Knowledge/Skills:
      • ​​​​​​​Thorough understanding of and commitment to the goals and responsibilities of the centralized career services concept. Consummate team player and relationship builder who thrives on student interaction. The successful candidate will demonstrate:
        • Strong student advocacy with proven ability to work with a diverse population.
        • Excellent project follow-through.
        • Team-building skills focused on student engagement and relationship building.
        • Analytical, reasoning, and problem-solving.
        • Polished presentation skills.
        • Proficiency with personal computers and related hardware/software and experience with database management and career services-related software.

    Personal Protective Equipment must be worn when required. A respiratory function test and the ability to use respirators may be required. Stairs and uneven surfaces may be present; artificial lifts, etc., may or may not be available. The position may require the incumbent to walk outdoors in all types of weather to other buildings or offices located on the campus. The Campus is in an area that contains numerous hills and slopes and may not always be fully accessible for mobility-impaired individuals.
