Administers medications using proper dosage, route, timing, and techniques. Being a Certified Medication Technician verifies the identity of the patient receiving medication. Records the name of the drug, the dosage, the time of administration, and any other relevant information on specified forms or records. Additionally, Certified Medication Technician takes vital signs and observes patient to detect response to medication. Follows all relevant safety guidelines and regulations. Requires a high school diploma. Requires Certified Medication Technician (CMT) certification. Typically reports to a registered nurse or manager. Job Summary:
Under supervision of a licensed pharmacist, obtains medication histories for patients being admitted to the hospital from the Emergency Department and other departments. Medication history information is obtained from the patient directly or the patient’s family, hospital records, retail pharmacy, or physician office. The technician enters the medication history into the electronic patient database; communicates completion of medication history to physician, nursing, and pharmacy staff; performs all duties in Pharmacy Tech II position; and assist higher levels complete other projects as assigned.
The position is also assigned general Pharmacy Technician work:
Aseptic I.V. preparation, proper storage, distribution, packaging, and labeling of medications, associated record keeping; and monitoring and reconciling hospital vaccine use and hospital medication usage reports.
Minimum Qualifications for the Job:
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent
Experience: Six (6) months experience as a BRH Pharmacy Technician I or the equivalent at a medical center, clinic, or hospital.
Substitutions: One (1) year of retail experience in a Pharmacy that included documenting medication history or performing medication history research may substitute for the required experience. OR Medication History Certificate may substitute for the required experience.
Certification(s): Valid State of Alaska Pharmacy Technician License.
Pharmacy Technician at time of appointment (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board).
Note: Incumbent must obtain a Medication History Certification within one year of hire. (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board). *Not applicable to those who already hold an accredited certification from the PTCB.
Internal Hires: Pay rate will be determined based on applicable personnel rule or union contract terms.
