Institutes emergency procedures as necessary. Additionally, Charge Nurse requires a bachelor's degree. Requires Registered Nurse (RN). Requires Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Charge Nurse supervises a small group of para-professional staff in an organization characterized by highly transactional or repetitive processes. Contributes to the development of processes and procedures. To be a Charge Nurse typically requires 3 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor.     Position Summary:
    Independently promote and restore patients' health through direct nursing care to assigned patients within the nursing process; collaborate with physicians and multidisciplinary team members. Work under the general nursing process while using independent judgment to assign nurses and technicians to assigned patients. The nature of the job is diverse with frequent new and varied work situations. The job involves a moderate degree of complexity. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups.

    Detailed responsibilities:
    * INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT - Using independent judgment assign nursing personnel and staff to specific patients
    * MISCELLANEOUS - Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned
    * DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature and attending in-services, meetings and workshops
    * RESOURCE - Act as a clinical resource and role model for department personnel
    * POLICIES AND PROCEDURES - Maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality assurance programs
    * STRATEGIC INITIATIVES - Active participation in nursing strategic initiatives such as quality improvement and monitoring, TJC compliance, recruitment and retention of staff and patient and employee satisfaction
    * DELEGATE - Delegate tasks and supervise the activities of other licensed and unlicensed care providers
    * DUTIES - As needed, RN may be required to provide direct nursing care to assigned patients
    * ADPIE - Ensure ability to assess, initiate and document nursing assessment, plan of care, interventions, evaluation and re-evaluation of patient status
    * TIME MANAGEMENT - Ensure ability to document and communicate pertinent information using computer and/or paper documentation tools in a timely and accurate manner
    * SHIFT ASSIGNMENTS - Designate shift and schedule assignments call in staff, send staff home and monitor attendance; assign duties in accordance with the plan of care, patient needs, and within the scope of staff qualifications and licensure/certification/registry and monitor completion of duties according to departmental and hospital policies
    * PATIENT SAFETY - Report potential and actual patient safety, concerns, medical errors and or near misses in a timely manner thru the chain of command and document within the PSN system
    * PATIENT CARE - Establish a compassionate environment by providing emotional psychological and spiritual support to patient, friends and families
    * PATIENT CARE - Promote patient’s independence by establishing patient care goals; teaching patient, friends, identified ley caregiver and family to understand condition, medications, and self-care skills; answering questions
    * TEAMWORK - Maintain a cooperative relationship among health care teams and resolve patient problems and needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies
    * PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols
    * PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes
    * PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk
    * PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner
    * PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may 'not seem right'

    * Basic Arrhythmia Cert w/in 1 year
    * RN in NM or as allowed by reciprocal agreement by NM
    * CPR for Healthcare/BLS Prov or Prof Rescuers w/in 30 days
    Nonessential:
    * Certified in area of specialty

    Physical Conditions:
    Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects or people. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
