Job Summary

Reporting to the Engineering Fellow, Gas Technologies, this position is part of the Applied Technology group in Longmont, Colorado.  This group supports Operations throughout the corporation with a focus on Specialty and Electronic gases, and provides technical support for customer inquiries with our Product Management team.  The group is tasked with maintaining corporate regulatory compliance with Department of Transportation regulations, specifically CFR 49 which regulates transportation of packaged goods including compressed gas cylinders, and actively participates in Compressed Gas Association.

Essential Functions

• Specific duties for this position include:
• Become familiar with CFR49 (DOT transportation regulations) and Compressed Gas Association publications.  Maintain corporate procedures to align with regulations and industry best practices.
• Assist with the development of policies related to international shipment of gases to comply with local regulations and organizations in Europe (International Standards Association, ADR (International Carriage of Dangerous Goods)) and Asia (Asian Industrial Gas Association, Japanese Industrial Standards).
• Maintain vetted physical property data sets including vapor pressures, densities, flammability limits and toxicity.
• Calculate cylinder fill limits based on physical properties and regulations.
• Participate as an active member in CGA activities to maintain and improve Regulations and Best Practice publications.
• Establish corporate policies and guide development of Work Instructions consistent with regulations and industry safety standards.
• Support our sales and marketing teams with technical presentations to customers.
• Provide the critical link between product development scientists and process design engineers, assisting with process scale-up, specification and selection of process and control equipment, identification of critical process parameters and key process indicators, implementation of lean manufacturing principles to minimize errors and waste, establishment of key process controls and preparation of detailed work instructions.
• Respond to production upsets at our manufacturing facilities, developing creative interim and permanent modifications to equipment and practices to restore on-spec production capability as quickly as possible.
• Respond to customer complaints and corrective action requests.  Manage corrective actions by working with the customer and our Operations group to design and conduct experiments to identify critical process parameters and obtain data necessary to address the corrective action.  Use of Six Sigma problem solving techniques and statistical skills will be required for many customer support actions.
• Collaborate on technical initiatives with our corporate parent and international associate organizations.
• Analyze processes, conduct experiments, identify critical parameters, implement process changes, and establish control systems to reduce variability, minimize waste, reduce lead and cycle times, increase capacity and reduce overall costs.
  Collaborate with the Ultra High Purity equipment group for the development and characterization of gas purification technologies.
• Lead efforts to provide continuous quality improvement to reduce costs, reduce variability, and identify specifications and properties that are truly critical to customer requirements and satisfaction, including contaminant specs, product control limits, mean time before delivery, etc.
