    Duties

    • Serves as a chemist with responsibility for the support analysis, and coordination of scientific research that include analyte quantization, metabolomics, proteomics, MALDI imaging, SpecID and Rapid B analyses.
    • Assists the Division in government procurement for ordering and purchasing lab supplies and laboratory equipment and keeping records of those purchases. Takes all necessary training to make PCARD (purchasing card) purchases.
    • Practices and enforces safe laboratory practices and hazardous materials handling; follows established safety guidelines and disseminates safety standards to all staff.
    • Keeps abreast of pertinent literature, extracts relevant details, and incorporates appropriate concepts and techniques into metabolomics, proteomics and MALDI imaging research activities.
    • Maintains state-of-the-art knowledge of the particular area of targeted mass spectrometry-based research throughout the life of the project, reviewing available literature on new methods and techniques for potential application within the laboratory.
    • Maintains complete, detailed records of all experiments performed.
    • Recreates experiments describing protocols, methods, and procedures used; summaries of data obtained; and descriptions of any problems or unusual situations encountered in carrying out the experiment.

    Qualifications

    The position of Chemist falls under the 1320 occupational series. To qualify for this position at grade GS-11, you must meet Time-in-Grade requirements by 11:59 pm EST on 05/01/2024.

    Basic Requirements

    A. Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

    Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. The specialized experience must demonstrate one year of full-time work experience , or the equivalent if part-time (for example, an employee working 20 hours per week for a 12-month period should be credited with 6 months of experience.) Experience may have been obtained in either the federal service or its equivalent with state or local government, the private sector, or nongovernmental organizations.
    GS-11: You must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9, in the Federal service, which includes: applying knowledge of analytical chemical principles, theories and practices sufficient to perform a full range of complex analysis and investigative duties; and purchasing lab supplies and laboratory equipment.

    3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.

    A combination of specialized experience and education as described above that, when combined, equal 100% of the total requirement.

    HHS has a critical preparedness and response mission: HHS protects the American people from health threats, researches emerging diseases, and mobilizes public health programs with domestic and international partners. In support of this mission, HHS offers its employees the opportunity to volunteer to become Federal Civilian Detailees and contribute their unique skills through voluntary temporary assignments to humanitarian emergencies or Departmental priorities countering new and emerging health, safety, and security threats.

    Federal agencies may request information regarding the vaccination status of selected applicants for the purposes of implementing other workplace safety protocols, such as protocols related to masking, physical distancing, testing, travel, and quarantine.

    Pine Bluff is the tenth-largest city in the state of Arkansas and the county seat of Jefferson County.
