Vice President, Chief Development Officer

    Reporting to the President of the University, the Vice President of Development and Chief Development Officer provides collaborative leadership and strategic direction for an integrated and comprehensive university-wide advancement program. This role serves to grow and strengthen philanthropic support, alumni and community relationships and the university reputation as the institution's Chief Development Officer. The position has executive responsibility over planning, implementation and administration of a comprehensive fundraising program that aligns with university values and priorities to ensure a strong base of financial support for all missions – academic, research and clinical. 

    The Chief Development Officer will work collaboratively with representatives from the academic, research and clinical mission areas, including the President’s office, to integrate and advance the fundraising priorities and strategic initiatives of the university.  This role will foster a strong team orientation, encouraging collaborative and professional relationships among the various functions and throughout the university.

    Essential Job Functions: 

    Philanthropic Responsibilities

    • Participate in university-wide strategic planning efforts and identify compelling major and principal funding opportunities within the university and match them with existing and potential donors. 
    • Develop and implement strategic plans to support the individual needs of each of the schools, research priorities, and clinical care which include short-term and long-term philanthropic goals to support all UTMB mission areas.
    • In collaboration with the President and with approval from UT System, identify, develop and execute designated campaign initiatives to support targeted areas of distinction.
    • Oversee and lead UTMB’s initiatives related to annual giving, planned giving, major gifts, fund raising for all foundation giving, alumni affairs, and special events for the purpose of maximizing support from alumni, individuals, foundations and corporations.
    • Lead the planning, communication and maintenance of a long-range program in the area of planned gifts, wills, bequests, trusts and other types of deferred giving in order to support the institution’s mission areas.
    • Develop and implement new and innovative plans to strategically identify and acquire prospective individual and institutional donors; increase donor retention; and upgrade and renew existing donors.
    • In conjunction with the President and senior leaders, develop clear, consistent, cohesive, and compelling messages around funding opportunities that result in philanthropic support for all UTMB mission areas.
    • Manage special projects as assigned by the President.

       

      Development Board Engagement and Alumni Relations

      • Oversee activities and organize engagement of the UTMB Development Board and lead the planning and execution of the annual Development Board Meeting.
      • Assist the President and Development Board leadership in the identification, recruitment, and cultivation of new Development Board members on an annual basis.   
      • Provide the highest level of support to volunteer leadership and Development Board members for their activities on behalf of UTMB.
      • Oversees UTMB’s Alumni Relations Programs for all schools, in collaboration with the Deans, Provost and President.
      • Develops and executes recruitment plans for UTMB alumni, residents, and fellows to become engaged in UTMB philanthropic efforts.

      Marginal or Periodic Functions:

      • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
      • Performs related duties as required.

      Minimum Qualifications:

      • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree or higher preferred.
      • At least ten years of progressively increasing fundraising leadership experience in a large, complex academic environment, healthcare organization or other distinguished setting.
      • Experience in public higher education preferred.
      • Specific experience in managing and leading major multi-year, multi-purpose comprehensive gift campaigns.

      Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

      • Possess a track record of developing and implementing a strategic multi-year fundraising plan with key metrics and goals for all staff that are tracked.
      • Develop a sense of community and collaboration within the development office and across the clinical, academic and research enterprises.
      • Model successful cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors and coaching and mentoring others as they develop those skills.
      • Bring current best practices to bear on key development areas such as major gifts, planned giving, annual fundraising, and campaigns.
      • Effective leadership, problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
      • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
      • Experience in preparing operating budgets, capital campaign goals budgets and systems for internal operations.
