Requires an advanced degree. Additionally, Chief Financial Officer may require the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credential.     The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) plays a crucial role in the institution's strategic financial management and planning. Reporting to the COO, the CFO oversees all financial operations, budgeting, and fiscal planning to ensure the institution's financial stability and growth. This role requires strong financial acumen, leadership, and a commitment to the mission and values of Saint John’s University along with close collaboration with the College of Saint Benedict CFO and the Order of Saint Benedict Treasurer.

    • Collaborate with the College of Saint Benedict CFO to align operational functions and ensure full coordination and efficiencies are achieved.
    • Manage change and promote coordination and efficient operation throughout financial operations.
    Financial Management:
    • Develop and implement financial strategies to support the institution’s mission and goals.
    • Along with College of Saint Benedict CFO, oversee the preparation, management, and analysis of the institution’s budget.
    • Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations and reporting requirements.
    • Oversee the management of the endowment and investment funds to optimize returns while minimizing risks.
    • Recognize and develop new income and revenue potential amidst organizational challenges and opportunities.
    Financial Reporting:
    • Provide regular financial reports to the COO/President/ Board of Trustees and other key stakeholders.
    • Staff Board of Trustees’ committees as assigned.
    • Maintain transparency and accountability in financial matters.
    Risk Management:
    • Identify and assess financial risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.
    • Establish financial policies and procedures to safeguard institutional assets.
    Capital Planning and Financing:
    • Lead financial efforts related to capital projects, including financing and budgeting.
    • Explore and recommend opportunities for cost-effective financing and capital investments.
    • Manage the debt portfolio and evaluate and recommend financing options to support capital projects.
    Financial Planning:
    • Collaborate with senior leadership to develop long-term financial plans aligned with the institution’s strategic priorities.
    • Ensure that financial plans support enrollment and academic goals.
    • Think strategically and align financial goals with the institution’s mission.
    Treasury and Cash Management:
    • Manage cash flow and liquidity, including the oversight of cash reserves.
    • Optimize cash management and investment strategies.
    Audit and Compliance:
    • Coordinate financial audits and ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
    • Address audit findings and implement necessary improvements.
    Team Leadership:
    • Supervise and mentor finance and accounting staff, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement.
    • Promote professional development within the finance team.
    Technology and Systems:
    • Oversee financial systems, recommending and implementing improvements as needed.  
    • Stay updated on advancements in financial technology.
    • Bachelor’s degree required in accounting or closely related field; MBA, CPA strongly preferred.
    • A minimum of 10 years in progressive financial leadership experience; preferably in higher education or a related non-profit sector.
    • Significant experience with financial forecasting and reporting techniques. 
    • Demonstrated management, leadership and supervision capabilities, and experience in a complex non-profit organization.
    • Excellent analytical and decision-making skills.
    • Experience with financial systems and a strong ability to use technology to solve unique and challenging problems.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods while using a computer. 
    TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:
    • This position requires periodic travel to various locations, including but not limited to CSB and SJU campuses, client meetings, industry conferences, and other business-related events.
