Chief Medical Officer directs the staff and develops policies for the organization's clinical programs. Works closely with hospital staff, department directors, and physicians to ensure that the highest standards of quality and service are maintained. Being a Chief Medical Officer oversees the implementation of quality improvement efforts designed to improve clinical performance and maintain compliance with HIPAA and other regulations and standards. Evaluates developments and innovations in medical care and makes recommendations for new practices and procedures. Additionally, Chief Medical Officer advises CEO and medical teams on matters impacting patient care. Requires a MD. Requires State License to Practice Medicine. Typically reports to top management. The Chief Medical Officer manages a business unit, division, or corporate function with major organizational impact. Establishes overall direction and strategic initiatives for the given major function or line of business.      QUALIFICATIONS:

     

    1.   Education:    Graduate of an accredited medical school with a current license to practice through the Arkansas State Medical Board.  Additional education in quality and utilization management through continuing medical education programs and self-study.

               

    2.   Training and Experience:    Minimum of five (5) years experience in hospital clinical practice.  Utilization management experience as a member of the UM oversight committee or past physician advisor experience preferred.  Certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support.

     

     DESCRIPTION:

     

    The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) provides leadership, direction, and planning for a wide variety of medical and related activities for the hospital.  This executive serves as the liaison and resource to management on matters pertaining to medical staff activities.  The hospital CMO is committed to the mission of quality, safety, service, and improvement of patient clinical outcomes.  He/she is a leader in promoting physician performance in these areas.  In addition, the CMO conducts clinical quality review on cases referred by case management staff and/or other health care professionals in accordance with the hospital's objectives for assuring quality patient care and effective, efficient utilization of health care services, and to meet regulatory requirements.  He/she meets with case management and health care team members to discuss selected cases and make recommendations for care and interacts with medical staff members and medical directors of third party payers to discuss the needs of patients and alternative levels of care.  Will also act as a consultant and resource to the medical staff regarding federal and state utilization and quality regulations.
