Chief Medical Officer directs the staff and develops policies for the organization's clinical programs. Works closely with hospital staff, department directors, and physicians to ensure that the highest standards of quality and service are maintained. Being a Chief Medical Officer oversees the implementation of quality improvement efforts designed to improve clinical performance and maintain compliance with HIPAA and other regulations and standards. Evaluates developments and innovations in medical care and makes recommendations for new practices and procedures. Additionally, Chief Medical Officer advises CEO and medical teams on matters impacting patient care. Requires a MD. Requires State License to Practice Medicine. Typically reports to top management. The Chief Medical Officer manages a business unit, division, or corporate function with major organizational impact. Establishes overall direction and strategic initiatives for the given major function or line of business.     Primary Health Care (PHC) was founded in 1981 by Dr. Bery Engebretsen in Des Moines, IA.  Our mission has remained unchanged since that time, to provide healthcare and supportive services to all, regardless of insurance, immigration status, or ability to pay.  

    Based on the needs of the communities we serve, PHC offers a spectrum of medical and dental services including family practice, behavioral health, HIV care and services, services for people experiencing homelessness, and pharmacy. Enabling services are available to help patients with benefits enrollment, case management, transportation, translation, and patient education. We currently have locations in Ames, Des Moines, & Marshalltown. 




    The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is a member of the Executive Leadership Team responsible for organizational strategy and for ensuring consistent achievement of PHC's mission and financial objectives. The CMO develops, implements, and evaluates the medical and behavioral health practice delivery models in accordance with the goals of PHC, sharing in the administrative functions that directly impact care services and collaborating with the management team in overall planning and budget activities. The CMO oversees the delivery of high-quality services to all patients by supporting and participating in the performance improvement program and assumes leadership responsibilities in the absence of the CEO and COO. The CMO demonstrates PHC's iCare values in daily work. 

    The Chief Medical Officer is a full-time position, with time split between administrative responsibilities and providing direct patient care in the clinics. 

    Requirements of the position include a current M.D. or D.O. license with the ability to practice in the state of Iowa, excellent leadership skills, experience working with grant-funded programs, and a strategic mindset.  Experience in Federally Qualified Health Center operations preferred.
