Associate Chief Colorectal Surgery

    The Associate Chief Colorectal and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery, in concert with Division Chief, develops the vision consistent with the mission of CNHS, and a strategic plan to provide access to patients and families who need Colorectal and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgical services. Is responsible for developing and implementing outcome metrics in concert with the Chief to meet the highest clinical performance. Works with Chief to set standards of excellence for faculty within the division. Develops policy and procedures, collaborates with outside departments in the care and treatment of children in need of colorectal surgical care. Active with research protocols and helps develop other faculty members interested in research, as well as serves as principal investigatory (PI) for the international colorectal consortium, PCPLC (www.pcplc.org). Take a leadership role in education of medical students, surgical residents, colorectal fellows, and international visitors - to maximize their educational experience, and to help create the process whereby these individuals refer complex patient to us from their home institution when they return there after training with us. Takes an active role in the clinical schedules to ensure coverage of all sites and locations where colorectal care is provided. Maintains professional standards of the division, and represents the Chief and the Division with workgroups and activities when Chief is not able to attend. Assists hospital management in the preparation for external reviews and facilitates programs within the division. Initiates and develops innovative ways to provide access to the colorectal and pelvic reconstructive needs of our patients and community we serve (i.e. optimization of electronic health record, telemedicine, program development, collaboration with other colorectal centers, etc.)

    Qualifications Minimum Education
    Medical Doctor (M.D.) Medical degree from an accredited medical school. (Required)

    Minimum Work Experience
    5 years expertise in the clinical care of colorectal patients as well as programmatic development (Required)

    Required Skills/Knowledge
    Knowledge of current principles, methods and procedures for the delivery of medical evaluation, diagnosis and treatment in the area of expertise. Knowledge of legal and ethical standards for the delivery of medical care. Ability to function independently in evaluating patient problems and developing a plan for patient care. Ability to incorporate ethical concepts into patient care and discuss these with the patient, family, and other members of the health care team. Ability to supervise, advice, and train clinical professionals and/or students in area of expertise. Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards. Demonstrates a personal commitment to Quality of Care and remains current on the developments and progress in his/her subspecialty. Demonstrates knowledge of and complies with legal and ethical standards for the delivery of medical care. Previous experience managing faculty, department, or program in an academic setting.

    Required Licenses and Certifications
    Board Certified, fully licensed and credentialed attending staff category physician on the medical staff of Children's National Medical Center (Required)

    • Identify problems related to patient services and make recommendations for improvement.
    • Cooperate and participate in the development, implementation and revision of policies affecting surgical practice, judgment and quality of care; Participate as a member of special care teams, Medical Staff and hospital committees.
    • Review and prepare protocol for use by staff. Evaluate patient care according to adopted protocol and Quality Assurance program criteria.
    • Participate in evaluation of peers and support staff; acknowledge and report medical and/or other errors as well as participate in efforts to prevent them.

    • Develop, in concert with the Center leadership, a divisional vision consistent with the mission of CNMC and a strategic plan to implement the highest clinical care of colorectal surgical care.
    • Anticipate future strategic, operational and financial trends and consequences in the marketplace, technology and healthcare innovations.
    • Develop planning scenarios and formulate strategies.
    • Identify and assess all variables that may impact patient outcomes.
    Division Leadership
    • Establish standards and monitors the clinical performance of the division; develop policies and procedures that are necessary to support the provision of care provided by the Division and the clinical outcome/quality goals of CNMC in conjunction with the Chief.
    • Set the clinical directions for the Division and its members, in concert with the Center leadership and Chief.
    • Take a leadership role in promoting the activity of the Division to enhance CNMC's clinical and academic reputation within the community and, as appropriate, nationally/internationally, and work, in concert with the institution, in marketing of Division activities.
    • Develop the clinical operational activities of the Division, including activities specific to the Division that affects the operations. This may include intramural as well as regional and national education.
    • Ensure adherence within the Division of the hospital and medical staff bylaws and policies and procedures.
    Financial Management
    • Participate in financial planning and budget preparation for the resource needs of the division.
    • In conjunction with the Chief, work to best align resources to meet patient demand, participating in philanthropic opportunities, if necessary, for future capital planning and purchases.
    • Track, monitor, and evaluate best resource allocation to patient demand and increase access to the Division.
