    Job Summary

    Student Affairs Finance at the University of Colorado Boulder encourages applications for a Director of Student Affairs Finance position. Reporting to and partnering with the Executive Director of Finance and Business Administration, the Director of Student Affairs Finance plays a critical role in developing, planning, directing and implementing Student Affairs’ financial management strategy. This role will use an understanding of higher education accounting practices and financial models along with a knowledge of the evolving nature of the university’s funding structure to recommend optimal budgeting and resource management practices for the division. This position is a strategic partner in providing leadership and vision to the Student Affairs Executive Team regarding the management of division finances including $220M in funding from auxiliary revenue, fees, general fund budget, gifts, and grants. This role is critical in ensuring that the division’s financial resources are managed effectively to enable Student Affairs to meet its long-term strategic goals in alignment with the overall campus fiscal strategy. This position will be responsible for the effectiveness of the division’s financial planning, analysis, and reporting standards and for ensuring the integrity and accuracy of divisional financial information.

This includes where students live, eat, make friends, build professional skills and find help if they need it. Many departments provide involvement opportunities, educational resources and support services to help students find their community and build lifelong skills. Student Affairs also has shared services departments that support the work and staff of our student-facing areas, including areas like assessment, business services, financial planning, human resources, marketing communications and information technology (IT).

    Student Affairs Finance

    Student Affairs Finance is a centralized service center for the Division of Student Affairs that provides support in all financial and accounting areas. Staff collaborate with departments to understand their operational processes in order to best advise them on appropriate accounting and financial practices. They assist with budget planning and financial management, financial reporting and analysis, billing and invoicing services and more.

    What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

    Leadership & Administration

    • Implement optimal organizational structure, systems, and processes to support an integrated, division-wide approach to budgeting, planning, financial modeling, cash controls and asset management.
    • Provide direction and set standards to integrate diversity, equity, and social justice concepts and practices into departmental processes and decision making.
    • Mentor and develop staff including training, goal setting, performance evaluation and problem resolution.
    • Create a collaborative, team-oriented environment for a finance team composed of primarily remote employees.
    • Continually assess departmental performance to find opportunities to improve operations and implement standard processes.
    • Engage, partner, and collaborate with staff across the division to align departmental operations with effective fiscal management strategies.
    • Collaborate extensively with division leadership, directors, campus partners and other collaborators on financial matters.
    • Develop a culture of financial responsibility through communication and training.
    • Demonstrate the ability to handle issues of complex and political sensitivity with balanced judgment and professional discretion.

    Financial & Risk Management

    • Lead the preparation of division rate proposals, budgets, forecasts, financial models, and feasibility studies.
    • Ensure accuracy and completeness of complex financial models and reports developed by SA Finance staff.
    • Provide technical and strategic financial guidance to Student Affairs leadership demonstrating standardized and ad hoc financial reports and employing a broad range of financial models, scenarios, and tools.
    • Prepare effective presentations to communicate complicated financial information to a broad range of audiences.
    • Identify and assess opportunities to generate additional revenue or to reduce expenses and provide concrete operational guidance to bring those opportunities to fruition.
    • Lead the identification, collection and analysis of external revenue and expense drivers to appropriately assess current and future resource needs.
    • Assess divisional cash flows to recommend appropriate reserve targets for financial and operational long-range stability.
    • Champion the development and implementation of a division-wide approach to billing, collections, accounts receivable and cash management.
    • Ensure the division’s financial activity is aligned with all local, State, Federal laws, codes, and regulations, and systems as well as campus and departmental policies and procedures.
    • Mitigate risk through policy, protocol, training, and strong internal controls governing payment card operations, eCommerce systems, payment applications and merchant account oversight.
    • Identify potential fiscal concerns, report to division leadership to ensure visibility and recommend corrective measures as needed.

    Campus Representation & Strategic Partnerships

    • Partner with the Provost’s Office, the Campus Controller’s Office, the Budget and Fiscal Planning and the CU System Treasurer’s Office on policies and tools that enable a centralized and broad approach to divisional budgeting, forecasting, fiscal compliance, billing, and cash management.
    • Serve on a variety of campus and university-wide committees and work groups to support and advocate for the priorities of the division.
    • Act as a visible and vocal leader for SA Finance within the Division of Student Affairs, the campus, and the university.

    What You Should Know

    • This position is assigned a hybrid work modality, working both remotely and on the CU Boulder campus.
    • The typical schedule for this position is Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm.

    What We Can Offer

    • The salary range for this position is $129,000 to $150,000 annually.

    What We Require

    • Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting or a related field. Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the degree on a year for year basis.
    • Six years of progressively responsible management experience within finance. This experience should also include the supervision of professional staff.

    What You Will Need

    • Demonstrated knowledge of university and state accounting and fiscal rules.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to integrate vision, strategy, and activities to find solutions to complex problems.
    • Proven ability to work with a wide range of people and approach relationships with a customer-service orientation.
    • Knowledge of trends in higher education financial management and various budgeting models.

    What We Would Like You to Have

    • Master’s degree in business or public administration, finance, accounting or related field.
    • Experience in higher education-based management and leadership in financial planning and analysis.
    • Breadth of experience across accounting, finance, investment, internal controls, and management/leadership of operational practices and processes that enhance financial results.
    • Experience leading staff through strategic, operational, and future-looking financial analysis, modeling, and capital planning.
    • Demonstrated experience implementing institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion goals and strategies.
    • Proficiency with software, particularly PeopleSoft, Anaplan, Microsoft Office Suite.
