  • The Lead Domestic Violence Shelter Specialist is under general supervision of the Domestic Violence Shelter Coordinator, and is responsible for providing a therapeutic environment, maintaining a home-like atmosphere, and providing daily care, training, supervision, and the day-to-day responsibilities of working with the residents at the Domestic Violence Shelter. This position provide advocacy, education, and crisis intervention for victims of domestic violence and their children who are residents of the shelter, as well as callers who contact the facility when there is a crisis. This position serves as the acting supervisor in the absence of the Domestic Violence Shelter Coordinator.

    · Supervise and lead assigned shift; Assists with management of the house and property, and provides coaching and guidance to staff; Coordinate employee training as needed to ensure that employees are knowledgeable in perform their job duties.

    · Oversee work schedules to ensure adequate staffing of the facility and coordinate shift coverage as needed; Maintain and review all appropriate paperwork as specified in program policies and procedures, including documents of incidents, contact sheet, activity logs, and inventory.

    · Maintains program structure by following program rules and procedures; Assist with implementation of target goals and transition plans; Meet with assigned staff to ensure that efficient and effective advocacy and case management are attained for residents which includes providing reports.

    · Assist with providing community support by answering the crisis hotline which includes supportive listening, offering assistance, and resources; Assist new residents with orientation to the facility and staff with meeting the household needs of the residents; Oversee documentation and processes completed by staff.

    · Provide supportive listening, helps resolve conflict and assists residents in understand shelter guidelines; Supports residents in daily maintenance/cleaning of their rooms and common areas by maintaining a healthy environmental condition in the home; Model appropriate interaction and responsible behavior for residents, including confidentiality, attentiveness to house rules, cleanliness, politeness, conflict resolution, and respect.

    · Participate in the hiring process of staff by interviewing and providing input; Participate in community awareness events by planning, creating, and developing various components of community education and awareness; Assist in disseminating information; Maintain availability to staff on a 24-hour basis and may periodically provide shift coverage themselves when unable to successfully coordinate staff coverage.

    · Perform other related duties as assigned.

    · Knowledge of the Gila River Indian Community and its laws, practices, and cultures.

    · Knowledge of crisis intervention techniques.

    · Be of good moral character and have good physical and emotional health.

    · Ability to effectively plan, supervise, and coordinate the work of others.

    · Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

    · Ability to supervise clients indoors and outdoors by standing for extended periods of time

    · Ability to act professionally and efficiently in crisis situation.

    · Ability to learn, be non-judgmental and work well with others in a team environment.

    · Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

    · Ability to work cooperatively with other employees, elected officials, clients, agencies, and the public.

    · Ability to effectively use computers and related computer application software.

    · Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position; agree to maintain a Drug-free workplace.

    · Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in Social Services, Human Services, Sociology, Psychology, or a closely related field and three (3) years’ experience in a residential facility, shelter, or similar environment which included working with trauma survivors or crisis intervention and which included one (1) year lead/supervisory experience; OR

    · Five (5) years’ experience in a residential facility, shelter, or similar environment which included working with trauma survivors or crisis intervention and which included two (2) years lead/supervisory experience

    · Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Social Services, Human Services, Sociology, Psychology, or a closely related field preferred.

    · Must be 21 years of age or older

    · Will be required to work a rotating schedule; days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and provide coverage as needed.

    · Required to pass a background check and fingerprint clearance as a condition of employment and must continue to maintain throughout duration of employment.

Background checks are required for positions that involve regular contact with or control over Community Children in accordance with The Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, 25 U.S.C. Sections 3201 through 3210 and C.F.R. Part 63 and positions that have regular contact with the Elderly..

    · Maintain have First Aide & CPR Certification or obtain within 90 days of hire and maintain throughout employment.

    · Must pass a TB skin test; provide proof/results prior to hire date of employment. TB skin test must also be completed annually and provide proof/results.

    · Be able to withstand the physical and emotional stress of carrying on responsibilities for domestic violence victims.

    · Required to obtain a Tribal Operator’s permit. Valid state driver’s license with proof of driving record for the past 39 months will be required to qualify for a tribal driving permit. Proof of driving record must be submitted with application and must not be more than 60 days old from the date of submission of the application

    · Required mandatory reporter pursuant to Title 7, Chapter 2 (7.205), B.

    · Required to attend Title 7 Mandatory Reporting training on a yearly basis.

    · Must maintain all agency training and certification requirements.
