    Job Summary

    Provides clinical leadership and operational oversight throughout shift; assigns supplemental staff to units based on unit needs and proactively manages requests for admissions, transfers and discharges facilitating throughput of patients throughout the hospital, thereby ensuring timely turnaround of beds. Provides leadership, support and guidance to all staff and presents a positive image and attitude. Collaborates with other healthcare team members and uses a systematic critical-thinking approach in data gathering, assessment, nursing judgment, intervention and evaluation of human responses to actual and potential health problems. All responsibilities are carried out in accordance with the mission, vision, strategic imperatives and standards of the organization, American Nurses Association Standards and in accordance with the provisions/statues set forth by the South Carolina Nurse Practice Act.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
    Minimum Years of Experience: 5 Years of acute care nursing experience
    Substitutable Education & Experience (Optional): Consideration will be given to ADN or Diploma RN who are currently enrolled in BS in nursing or RN-MSN program with the expectation that BS in nursing degree or completion of BS in nursing coursework is met within 12 months of hire/promotion
    Required Certifications/Licensure: Current RN license to practice in the state of SC; National Nursing Certification preferred at time of hire/promotion; required within 6 months of hire/promotion;

    ACLS & ASLS at time of hire or within 3 months of hire or promotion.
    Required Training: None.

    Essential Functions

    PATIENT CARE AND SUPPORT

    • Establishes positive rapport with patient and family.
    • Establishes a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, friends, and families.
    • Promotes patient's independence by establishing patient care goals; provides education to patient, and family in a manner they can understand their condition, medications, and self-care skills, etc. and provides them ample opportunity to ask questions.
    • Serves as patient/family advocate
    • Maintains continuity among nursing teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
    • Uses a systematic critical-thinking approach to guide data gathering, assessment, nursing judgement, intervention and evaluation of human responses to actual and potential health problems.
    • Identifies, synthesizes and interprets sources of data using reasonable clinical judgement to respond to dynamic situations in a timely and effective manner.
    • Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential.
    • Uses ethical decision making processes and advocates for acceptable patient outcomes.
    • Assigns supplemental staff to units based on unit needs.
    • Demonstrates proficiency in the use of the bed boardl. Appropriately manages requests for admissions, transfers, and discharges facilitating throughput of patients ensuring timely turnaround of beds.

    CLINICAL WORK QUALITY

    • Assists with resolution of patient and visitor concerns and problems.
    • Represents hospital administration in their absence. Confers with the administrative person on-call to obtain assistance with problems or to report significant events.
    • Supports departmental and unit based governance processes as evidenced by communication and facilitation of changes and information.
    • Demonstrates ability to work with personnel in a manner, which fosters positive employee development and performance.
    • Recommends and initiates personnel action for performance issues utilizing appropriate channels and procedures.
    • Clarifies and interprets administrative, personnel, and nursing services policies and procedures.
    • Utilizes ethical principals in managing and leading personnelh. Promotes high standards of care and practice, and holds staff and self-accountable.
    • Communicates clearly and in a timely manner both verbally and in writing.
    • Utilizes effective communication skills such as active listening, conflict prevention, conflict management/ resolution, negotiation and effective problem solving skills.
    • Collaborates with staff, physicians and others to promote positive change.
    • Embraces diversity – fosters an inclusive environment/workplace where diversity and individual differences are valued and leveraged to achieve the vision and mission of the unit/organization.
    • Demonstrates compliance with regulatory standards.
    • Coordinates the appropriate placement of patients on patient care units.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • Receives patient status reports, and collaborates with unit Clinical Coordinators, Nurse Managers, other Clinical supervisors, and Physicians to effectively place patients and determine priorities for transfers.
    • Responds to patient emergencies.
    • Responds to all hospital-wide emergency situations, assists as necessary, and assumes leader role as indicated by disaster plan.
    • Makes assessment of DNR patient death, notifies physician and completes appropriate documentation.
    • Role models critical thinking skills
    • Coordinates calls and arrangements with Organ Procurement Agency, Coroner, and funeral homes at time of patient death.
    • Adheres to and promotes LMC’s code of conduct.
    • Participates in process/performance improvement activities and initiatives utilizing evidence based practice to maintain and/or improve quality of care and safe patient care systems and processes.
    • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations.
    • Documents all patient care activities accurately and timely.
    • Provides safe, appropriate, quality of care and support to patients and family members. Oversees compliance and adherence to patient Bill of Rights.
    • Functions as a positive change agent by: i.e. communicating practice changes and/or performance standards and supporting staff efforts through implementation and adoption of change.
    • Ensure Hazardous Waste or Hazardous Waste Pharmaceuticals are discarded, stored, and managed with other compatible waste streams in containers that are properly labeled and closed prior to being shipped offsite for proper disposal. Initial RCRA training is received within 6 months of the hire date and continuing with annual RCRA training.

    RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

    • Demonstrates proficiency in managing resources to assure safe and effective operations.
    • Documents personnel changes each shift on the master staffing sheet.
    • Provides input into selection of equipment and materials for departmental and organizational use.
    • Assures follow-up with Nurse Managers of defective/unsafe supplies and/or equipment.
    • Accurately completes and maintains required records and reports.
    • Demonstrates time management and prioritization skills.
    • Reviews trends and makes recommendations for improvement in patient care.
    • Recognizes variations from standards of practice, takes action as necessary and reports to appropriate personnel (Nurse Manager or designee, etc.).
    • Facilitates the implementation of strategies for the improvement of patient care activities.
    • Demonstrates personal effectiveness, manages emotions in the face of pressure and proactive situations and demonstrates the characteristics of commitment and motivation.
    • Adapts effectively to a variety of situations, individuals and groups. Values different perspectives and adapts approach as requirements of the situation change.
    • Recognizes need for and participates in development and implementation of process improvements.

    PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
    • Meets or exceeds all LMC requirements for attendance and service expectations.
    • Maintains required certifications.
    • Completes yearly safety training and other mandatory classes.
    • Complies with all annual employee health requirements.
    • Earns a minimum of 25 hours of continuing education annually within specialty.
    • Maintains current ACLS and ASLS.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
