Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
This position will be responsible for mentoring 10th-13th grade students in the Kalamazoo County Early/Middle College program.
- Serves as a coach who works on developing a bond of trust with the students to help
them with their transition from high school to college.
- Meets with students on a regular basis to maintain a steady presence.
- Works collaboratively to assist EMC students with goal setting and college planning.
- Works closely with the EMC Coordinator, high school counseling staff, and KVCC
Advisors to coordinate the appropriate support services based on student need.
- Communicates with college partners, high school personnel, students and parents.
- Assists students with identifying a career path and related program of study; utilizes
xello as a tool in this process.
- Assists students with preparing for the Accuplacer placement test.
- Discusses college success strategies with students and helps them evaluate their
strengths and areas of improvement.
- Keeps students abreast of upcoming programming including Seminars, First Fridays, KVCC
Advisor meetings, etc.
- Assists students with the FAFSA application, college applications and scholarship
applications.
- Assists students with developing employability skills including job applications,
resumes, interviews, etc.
- Routinely tracks student performance and provides feedback, focusing on students’
needs and goals.
- Collects and analyzes data.
- Completes assigned responsibilities within agreed upon or established timelines.
- Performs additional tasks, responsibilities and duties as assigned by the EMC
Coordinator.
- Must have knowledge of and comply with the Kalamazoo RESA handbook.
Minimum Skills and Education Required:
Associate’s degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. Embraces and supports KRESA philosophies related to diversity, inclusiveness, and anti-racism. Ability to interact effectively with individuals from a wide range of cultures. Ability to discuss cultural differences with colleagues and clients. Ability to assess one’s own strengths and limitations or challenges and integrate this understanding into interpersonal interactions.
Preferred Skills and Education: (Preference given to a candidate with these skills, education, etc.)
Experience working with students in an educational setting preferred. Experience as an advisor, counselor, instructor, or mentor preferred.
