DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS
Unaffiliated - 12 months
Bridgeport Public Schools seeks a dynamic leader who will bring creativity and drive to the office of communications to improve the way the district communicates with external and internal audiences. The Communications Department is responsible for promoting the district's work and initiatives, strategic communication within and outside the district, and managing the district's brand. The Director of Communications reports to the Superintendent and will oversee media relations, online communication, marketing and will collaborate with every department to drive employee and constituent relations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop a clear and cohesive communication plan/strategy
- Collaborate with leadership team on issues related to communications and public affairs
- Build strong media relations
- Secure positive, accurate and robust national and regional media coverage that increases awareness, understanding and support of Bridgeport Public Schools
- Serve as a key external voice on behalf of the organization
- Oversees the editorial process of all district communications
- Manage crisis situations through media outlets
- Develop, launch, and maintain BPS branding campaign portraying the district vision.
- Generate informational content for stakeholders through publications i.e., newsletters, press releases, email announcements, videos, special projects
- Collaborate with building principals and department leaders highlighting events, activities, recognitions at school sites
- Promote and attend multiple events across the district
- Builds coalitions and works collaboratively with diverse stakeholders
- Performs other duties which may be assigned by Superintendent
- The above does not encompass all duties of the position
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree required. Masters preferred
- Background in Public Relations, Journalism or Marketing
- Five years of successful experience working directly with state or local government and/or large philanthropic organizations
- Extensive experience managing and developing organizational communications strategy
- Excellent verbal/written communication skills
- Excellent technical skills
- Established networks with all local, regional, and national media outlets
