    Estimated Start Date: March 2024

    Hours: 40 hours per week; occasional evenings and weekends

    Location: Hybrid based in Multnomah County, OR; ability to work from home up to 3 days/week. May work extended hours in Salem during legislative sessions.

    Physical/Cognitive Details: Regularly required to use a computer and phone to perform work and communicate with others for several hours each day. Occasionally required to travel throughout Oregon. Noise level in the office is moderate.

    Imagine Black is looking for a Just Transition Organizer to support the Oregon Black Worker Center project. This position will support building self-determination, leadership, and community among Black workers in Oregon. This new position is responsible for executing the organization’s strategic plan by implementing outreach programs to build and retain membership. This position requires the incumbent to be good at collaboration, show initiative, and take responsibility for helping to establish the foundational practices of the Oregon Black Worker Center.

    The Oregon Black Worker Center, guided by the National Black Worker Center, commits to building a more just economy for Black workers across Oregon and advancing the cause of the Black Worker Justice Movement. Our focus is on harnessing community strength, advocating for better job conditions through policy advocacy, and championing the rights of workers.

    ESSENTIAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

    Organizing & Community Outreach (90%)

    This position serves as the organizing support for all outreach and implementation of tactics for the Oregon Black Worker Center's programs and campaigns. They are responsible for coordinating volunteers, mobilizing community members, and effectively communicating to the organization's member base. The Just Transition Organizer supports the Oregon Black Worker Center across the following areas:

    • Coordinate and lead the monthly meetings of the Oregon Black Worker Center Core Committee, ensuring productive discussions and effective task management of actionable steps for each project.
    • Execute field strategy for member outreach and retention dedicated to building power for and with Black workers. 
    • Build strategic partnerships with organizations to meet Oregon Black Worker Center goals.
    • Identify member activists who will participate in focus groups, storytelling, and civic engagement strategies. 
    • Identify pressing organizing issues and organize direct actions, events, and other tactics to address said issues around Black worker justice.  
    • Implement campaign organizing tactics, strategies, goals, and objectives. 
    • Send out project updates and action alerts to Kinfolk members, volunteers, partners, and the community at large.
    • Educate members on the impact and opportunities for deeper involvement related to worker’s rights. 
    • Assist with the monitoring of campaign outcomes and deliverables.  
    • Organize volunteer turn-out and assist with activities and event logistics. 
    • Collaborate with other movement-building staff on short-term campaigns and projects as needed.
    • Participate in local and regional coalitions, partnerships, and networks; share responsibility for increasing the visibility and reach of the Oregon Black Worker Center. 
    • Maintain a project database, including data entry, observing and analyzing member trends, and engaging with member feedback.  
    • Assist in the writing of promotional materials and member communications. 
    • Mobilize community members to actions and events through phone banking, texting, social media, etc.  
    • Assist the Oregon Black Worker Center team in implementing social media and digital communication campaigns, including responding to direct inquiries.
    • Participate in the implementation of field campaign efforts during election cycles.
    • Collaborate with other movement-building staff on short-term campaigns and projects as needed.

    Organizational Support (10%)

    • Collaborate with the Development Division and Narrative and Communications Department in identifying and editing grants as needed, providing content for social media, and attending events.
    • Work with staff to integrate civic engagement, community organizing, and communications strategies.
    • Attend internal staff and department meetings and collaborate with other staff as needed.

    REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Minimum 2-3 years of experience in a field such as civic engagement, campaign management, community or grassroots organizing, coalition management, lobbying, political staffing, and/or community engagement experience. This experience may be met by volunteer activities or internships.
    • Knowledge of movement building and approaches to increase community power.
    • A passion for Imagine Black's mission and vision includes electoral organizing, advocacy, and organizing. 
    • A passion for how self-determination and radical Black imagination can directly influence policy.
    • Proven skills in working and communicating with communities within the African diaspora, especially with descendants of enslaved Africans, African immigrants and refugees, and Caribbean immigrants and refugees.
    • A commitment to applying a Black Queer Feminist Lens (see above) to organizing, leadership development, and civic and political participation.
    • Ability to self-motivate, self-direct, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Thorough knowledge of strategies and tactics used to organize, including managing data, organizing reports, digital organizing, and organizing turf.
    • A drive to try innovative tactics and experiment with new forms of campaign organizing.
    • Superb writer; skilled at making complicated ideas (complex laws, policies, and legislative initiatives) accessible to the general public through policy one-pagers, briefs, and reports.
    • Proficient computer skills.
    • Ability to work effectively with elected leaders and members in complex, political situations.
    • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
    • Ability and willingness to travel regularly (around 3 times per month).
    • Must be willing and able to work evenings/weekends about 2-3 times per month.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bi- or multi-lingual (Arabic, Amharic, Swahili, and Somali-speaking applicants are encouraged to apply).
    • Lived experience with Black community issues, particularly in Oregon.
    • Extensive knowledge of voter databases such as NGP VAN.
    • Experience with tools such as online policy resources, online statistical research, policy research and analysis, techniques of online advocacy, and polling.
    • Experience working with social media and email communications.
    • Results and deadline-driven.
    • Knowledge of political strategy and political landscape on local and state levels.
    • Comfortable with Google applications, Microsoft Office, Asana, Slack, and similar systems.
    • Proficient computer skills and ability to learn new systems as needed.
