    Department Summary

    The Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation (OVPRI) serves as an advocate and catalyst within the University for expanding the range and impact of UO's research, scholarship, and creative endeavors. The OVPRI oversees sponsored programs, research compliance, technology transfer, economic development, industry engagement, research-based ventures, and research development and administrative responsibility for numerous high-profile research centers and institutes and core research facilities, which provide opportunities for faculty across the university to collaborate on research efforts that are inherently interdisciplinary, and of significant societal importance.     Industry, Innovation, and Translation (IIT), a unit within the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation (OVPRI), is responsible for managing Intellectual Property (IP) development and commercialization as well as industry engagement and economic development related to the research activities of the UO. IIT helps researchers pursue and disclose inventions and other intellectual property-based assets that show the potential to provide commercial solutions to societal problems. IIT accelerates the impact of UO research by practicing proactive project management, acquiring intellectual property rights (patenting, copyright registration, trademarking), licensing, and supporting economic development, industry research, and other collaborative relationships including the sharing of information or material assets with private and public partners.

    Position Summary

    The IIT Licensing & Contracts Officer (LCO) works under the direction of the IIT Associate Director (IIT AD) to provide administrative, technical, contractual, compliance, and intellectual property expertise to the licensing, contracting, and innovation management functions within IIT. These duties are time-dependent and require being responsive to new inquiries and keeping constituents abreast of the status of a transaction, completing transactions in a timely manner, and determining the priority of transactions.

    Duties include, but are not limited to, drafting, negotiating, and managing the entirety of the process for material transfer agreements (MTAs), non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), data use agreements (DUAs) or data privacy agreements (DPAs), unfunded collaboration agreements (UCAs), royalty sharing agreements (RSAs), technology administration agreements (TAAs), project rules agreements (PRAs), teaming agreements (TAs), projects with non-exclusive license agreement programs and other technology transfer instruments and research or services agreements as assigned. The LCO is responsible for reviewing drafts and revising assigned agreements to ensure appropriate language and compliance, acting as a point of contact for campus departments, and communicating with external constituents on specific contracting issues. The LCO will review, draft, and negotiate these agreements as assigned. The LCO will process these agreements using Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, and IIT database applications. The LCO will research and interpret Federal, State, International, and University contracting policies, and regulations, coordinate review of agreements or specific terms by other units on campus as areas fall under their purview, and make recommendations for signature.

    The LCO will also review and help negotiate intellectual property, data, and confidentiality terms in agreements under the purview of other UO units or help other IIT staff with agreement issues, as assigned.

    The LCO will update pertinent information materials, training materials manuals, and licensing and contracting policies and procedures, provide information to campus users, and third parties concerning individual contracting transactions, as well as provide and present ongoing training and information to campus users concerning contracting and licensing and contracting and licensing operations.

    The LCO also provides innovation development, acquisition and management support, and eCommerce deployment support, as requested concomitant with educational and professional background, which may include providing information and guidance on intellectual property law and legal requirements for intellectual property acquisition.

    The LCO will support other projects and programs in furtherance of IIT's goals and mission as
    assigned and delegated by the Associate Vice President for Industry, Innovation, & Translation (AVP for IIT) and IIT AD.

    The position is full-time and located in Eugene, Oregon, however remote or hybrid work requests may be considered.

    Minimum Requirements

    • A bachelor's degree.
    • Three years of work experience in technology transfer, intellectual property management, a role that involved contract drafting, reviewing, and negotiating, or a relevant field.
      OR
    • J.D., MBA, or another graduate-level degree from an accredited institution of higher education that provides training as it relates to technology transfer, intellectual property management, or contract drafting, reviewing, and negotiating.
    • One year of work experience in technology transfer, intellectual property management, a role that involved contract drafting, reviewing, and negotiating, or a relevant field.

      Professional Competencies

    • Experience working with patents, copyrights, trademarks, licensing those intellectual properties, and drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts, including as an attorney, paralegal, or contracts or licensing assistant, specialist, associate, officer, manager, or other similar role.
    • Knowledge of state, federal, university, and agency regulations, laws, policies, and guidelines for research administration and compliance with state and federal regulations, laws, and policies.
    • Impeccable analytical, interpersonal, and written communication skills, as well as high ethical standards, mature judgment, and the capacity to foster constructive outcomes in a complex environment involving an array of distinct stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
    • Ability to develop comfortable and productive relationships with academic scientists and science/tech industry representatives.
    • Excellent Customer service orientation.
    • Ability to build consensus and work in complex teams across divisions.
    • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

      Preferred Qualifications

    • Master's or J.D. degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
    • Experience securing intellectual property right protection for Copyrightable works and/or Trademarks.
    • Experience with open source licensing.
    • Experience with Inteum software or related innovation management software/tools for reporting, data management, and intellectual property tracking.
    • Experience in developing and providing educational programming in the contracting or innovation space.
