    This job entails managing high voltage transmission, distribution, and substation construction/maintenance projects. You will be in charge of planning, directing, or coordinating, usually through subordinate supervisory personnel, activities concerned with the construction and maintenance of structures, facilities, and systems.     What You'll Do

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

    Project Management and Planning:

    • Oversee the construction and maintenance, Green or Brown field, of substations in remote locations.
    • Manage and light development of project plans, including scheduling, resource allocation, and budget management in coordination with a Project Manager.
    • Ensure onsite compliance with all applicable specifications, local, state, and federal regulations, focusing on safety, and environmental standards.

    Site Management:

    • Supervise substation construction activities, ensuring adherence to design specifications and safety protocols.
    • Manage on-site logistics, particularly addressing challenges related to remote locations.
    • Coordinate with engineers, technicians, and construction personnel for efficient project execution.

    Safety and Compliance:

    • Implement and enforce strict safety standards in line with OSHA guidelines.
    • Conduct regular safety meetings and emergency response drills, focusing on the specific risks of substation construction in remote areas.
    • Ensure all construction activities comply with environmental regulations.

    Quality Assurance and Control:

    • Oversee quality control to ensure construction meets required standards.
    • Facilitate testing and commissioning of substation components.

    Team Leadership and Development:

    • Lead and manage construction teams, ensuring effective communication and teamwork.
    • Provide training and development opportunities for team members.

    Stakeholder Communication:

    • Maintain clear communication with clients, government bodies, and other stakeholders.
    • Present regular project updates and reports.

    Emergency Response and Troubleshooting:

    • Develop contingency plans and respond promptly to emergencies and unexpected challenges.
    • Resolve technical and logistical issues efficiently.

    Technological Integration:

    • Stay abreast of emerging technologies relevant to substation construction and integrate these into projects where beneficial.

    Environmental Management:

    • Implement sustainable practices and strategies for minimizing environmental impact, in coordination with the Environmental specialist.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
    • Significant experience in substation construction, especially in remote or challenging environments.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of industry standards, regulations, and safety practices.
    • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational abilities.
    • Adaptability to work in diverse environments and under changing conditions.
    • Must pass mandatory drug and alcohol screening(s)

     

    As a Traveling Construction Manager focusing on substation projects, it's crucial to be familiar with a comprehensive range of construction activities specific to substations. Here's a list of key substation construction activities:

    Site Preparation and Foundation Work:

    • Clearing and grading the land.
    • Excavating for foundations.
    • Pouring concrete and setting base foundations for substation structures and equipment.

    Structural Assembly:

    • Erecting steel structures that support switchgear, transformers, and other substation equipment.
    • Assembling Rigid Bus, Slack spans, Jumpers, and other conductive pathways.

    Electrical Equipment Installation:

    • Installing major components like transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, and switchgear.
    • Setting up control buildings and installing control panels.

    Conduit and Grounding Systems:

    • Laying underground conduit systems for electrical and communication cables.
    • Installing grounding systems to ensure safety and system protection.

    Wiring and Electrical Connections:

    • Running power cables and control wiring throughout the substation.
    • Making electrical connections between equipment, including terminations and jointing.

    Testing and Commissioning:

    • Conducting tests on electrical components to ensure functionality and safety.
    • Commissioning the substation, which includes system integrations and operational testing.

    • Implementing relay protection systems for fault detection and isolation.
    • Setting up SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems for remote monitoring and control.

    Security and Surveillance Installations:

    • Installing fencing, security lighting, and surveillance cameras for site security.

    Environmental Protection Measures:

    • Implementing erosion and sediment control measures (SWPPP).
    • Ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, especially in sensitive areas.

    Maintenance and Upgrades:

    • Planning for ongoing maintenance of substation equipment.
    • Upgrading existing infrastructure to meet evolving power demands or technological advancements.

    Emergency Response Planning:

    • Developing and updating emergency response plans specific to substations.

    Regulatory Compliance and Documentation:

    • Ensuring all construction activities comply with regulatory standards.
    • Maintaining accurate records and documentation for compliance and future reference.
