    Brief Summary of Job Duties

    Operating under the supervision of the UCSB MESA Programs Director, the MESA Program Coordinator will have responsibility for the planning, design, implementation and quality control for the Santa Barbara County and Ventura County UCSB MESA College Prep Program (MCP).

    The Coordinator will develop and manage core components of this program, including the supervision of undergraduate staff.

    Provides academic preparation to K-14 students within the regional UCSB MESA Program, provides hands-on STEM education activities and curriculum, serves as the primary liaison between MESA school site advisors, MESA students, school district administrators, community and non-profit organizations, and serves the UC Santa Barbara MESA Programs Director and the OEP Director.

    • Specifically, the Coordinator will request, manage, and organize student records; prepare student academic performance plans;
    • provide training workshops for MESA Advisors, students and their parents; track project related expenses; generate site specific budgets;

    support the identification of external funds; and assist MESA staff with the development of special events, such as college tours, financial aid workshops, student leadership, parent leadership, summer programs, and MESA project and competitions, and awards events.

    Required Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

    1-3 years of significant experience advising and supporting educationally disadvantaged students regarding postsecondary opportunities and careers.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Strong knowledge and experience working with educational equity programs serving a diverse student population.

    Strong knowledge of up-to-date information on K-12 and higher education policies and issues. Ability to assess their impact on program strategies.

    Knowledge of K-12 and higher education institutions (UC, CSU, CC, etc.), admissions and financial aid requirements, and the ability to interpret policies and procedures to youth, parents, and school representatives.

    Knowledge of youth and adolescent development theory, including issues facing low-income, first generation urban youth.

    Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with school district administrators, school counselors, principals, teachers, and community contacts.

    Strong knowledge of high school graduation and college entrance requirements.

    Demonstrated cultural competency with respect to race, ethnicity, and socio-economic status.

    Strong communications (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.

    Significant experience advising and supporting educationally disadvantaged students regarding postsecondary opportunities and careers.

    Job Functions and Percentages of Time :

    50% Project Administration - Working under the general supervision of the MESA Programs Director within the Office of Education Partnerships (OEP), the MESA Programs Coordinator will provide academic and career enrichment, college-bound advising (A-G Course Requirements, Financial Aid), mentorship, and Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education resources to students and families of MESA school partners.

    Works directly with MESA College Preparation Program Advisors, UCSB, and school leadership to develop, organize, and implement the MESA Schools Program in UCSB-served partnership schools.

    The MESA Program has the following components, which would be implemented and managed by the Program Coordinator :

    • Individual academic plans & guidance
    • Coordination and creation of MESA & STEM academies
    • Career and college exploration opportunities
    • Study skills training workshops and seminars
    • Student leadership development
    • Academic achievement recognition & awards
    • Facilitation of mentoring by undergraduates, alumni & professionals
    • Parent education and leadership development, and
    • MESA Advisor and Teacher Professional Development opportunities.
    • Student Services : Present MESA Program goals, opportunities and requirements to students, student programs, school staff, and school boards.

    Invite and recruit eligible students for MESA, and assist advisors and staff in retaining eligible MESA students in the intersegmental MESA pipeline.

    Provide intensive and individualized academic advising for participating intermediate and high school students. Provide mentorship, including managing and supervising a program of undergraduate students who have linguistic, cultural, STEM and economic backgrounds in common with participating students.

    Supervision includes, but is not limited to, volunteers and undergraduate students. Connect students to academic preparation programs, including high quality university sponsored summer programs, internships, and academies.

    Parent and Family Engagement : Provide liaison services that connect families to schools and colleges by improving families' understanding of the college preparation and admissions process and by increasing parents' involvement in their children's education.

    Provide assistance to coordinate parent outreach activities for families participating in the MESA Program. Work with school personnel, including school counselors, to identify, recruit and monitor progress of students enrolled in programs and services provided by the MESA Program.

    Provide high-quality, culturally appropriate and linguistically competent liaison services between families, schools, community organizations, and the university.

    Coordinate parent and student outreach activities, in conjunction with mentoring staff (in-class, after-school and summer), site administrators, teachers and counselors, and with UCSB academic preparation and profession

    20% Communication & Coordination - Ensures effective and ongoing communication between MESA Program Advisors, UCSB MESA Director & staff, School Leadership, volunteers and mentors, and with students and families participating in the MESA Program.

    To accomplish this, the Program Coordinator will : Communicate on a regular basis with school personnel including superintendents, principals, counselors, school staff, and teachers to organize programs and events.

    Meet regularly with the UCSB MESA Program Director and Staff, OEP Director and Staff and Evaluation Coordinator as needed to assess program progress.

    Prepare written weekly updates and quarterly reports for the MESA Program Director and OEP Director to keep them informed of project progress with the program;

    communicate with staff of other university programs to bring resources to participating students and families. Coordinate programs and interact with partner organizations including UCSB MESA affiliates, and project related community and university based organizations.

    Assist in writing and preparing progress reports and making presentations on the MESA Program for a variety of audiences including college and university representatives, school leaders, parents / families, and community groups.

    10% Grant Development & Organizational Support - GRANT DEVELOPMENT Work closely with the UCSB MESA Director and staff and OEP staff, the Program Coordinator will assist in identifying possible funding opportunities, provide program data to be used in grant proposals, and assist with writing the proposals as needed.

    ORGANIZATIONAL SUPPORT Work closely with MESA Program Director to identify internal and external funding resources and to develop regional P-16 partnerships that support long-term program sustainability.

    10% Evaluation & Data Collection - In close consultation with the MESA Program Director and the OEP Director and Evaluation Coordinator, the Program Coordinator will be responsible for tracking the academic progress of MESA Program students in order to document the effectiveness of all program components and appropriate alignment with UC and UCSB academic preparation outcome goals.

    These activities will include : Coordinate with K-12 and school district personnel to gain access to all participating students' academic files including transcripts.

    Routinely document and collect student grades, test scores, course placements and other relevant indicators of student academic achievement in order to assess and make recommendations for supplemental academic support needs.

    Participate and assist with any related evaluation and data collection activities undertaken by internal and external evaluators, including graduate students and faculty.

    Collect, analyze and prepare summaries of data for purposes of reporting and for acquiring external funds (grants). Act as a liaison for OEP and MESA with respect to utilizing Transcript Evaluation Services and other data tools.

    10% Program Representation - Represent the MESA Program and the Office of Education Partnerships and at various community events, committee meetings, and on campus and UC system wide advisory and working groups as assigned.
