Correctional Officer enforces rules and regulations in a prison, jail or other holding facility. Presides over prisoners awaiting trial or those who have been convicted of a crime. Being a Correctional Officer oversees prisoner conduct and safety. Supervises prisoners during meals, recreation, work and other daily activities. Additionally, Correctional Officer documents violations and takes appropriate disciplinary actions. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Correctional Officer possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job. Works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. About Indiana State Prison
The Indiana State Prison is a maximum security correction institution located in Michigan City, Indiana close the shores of Lake Michigan.
The walled enclosure of the Prison is home for approximately 1,926 incarcerated individuals and is in its own right a self-contained city which encompasses an area of 24 acres. The Prison proper comprises 18 acres where housing units, industrial shops, and other facilities (i.e. food service and infirmary) are located. The remaining 6 acres are now used as the recreation area with a field house and the Prisoner’s Dining Room (PDR). This area was used as the Hospital for the criminally insane prior to 1957.
Outside, immediately adjacent to the walls is an additional 88 acres. This ground is used for the Official Staff residences and other correctional facilities such as Indiana State Prison – ISO/MSU and our own Powerhouse, storeroom, garage, etc.
Correctional Officer
The Correctional Officer is an exciting opportunity to launch your Criminal Justice career. In the role of a correctional officer you will build your experience by ensuring maintenance of order, control and supervision of incarcerated individuals in a state correctional institution and internal and external security. You will advise and instruct incarcerated individuals in their adjustment to institutional living. Work normally consists of relatively standardized tasks, following departmental and institutional policy. However, work at times requires on-the-spot decision making when coping with one or more unruly or irate incarcerated individuals . This position carries weapons when assigned to tower duty, transportation assignment, escape assignments or special assignments as determined by the appointing authority.
